Well...I bought Starcraft 1 a while ago and have been playing the Campaign, but today I decided to jump online and test my luck. Bad move. I played about 10 games and was decimated in them all. The only one that counted as a win was some person who randomly said "gg you win" and left, but he was in the process of wiping me out and I had no army left to defend. I knew there would be some tuff competition out there but I didn't know that even going into servers with the name "1v1 noobs only" would mean a complete pwning.

I know its been out for 12 years. But I'd hoped to at least be able to win one or two matches in severs claiming to be "noobs only".

A noob thats played 100 online games is going to completely destroy you when you have played less than 10. Skill gains are huge when you begin playing.

Rugmonkey, I've added you too iCCup my user is Pughy on there icon_smile.gif I'm defos getting better at the game, got around 100+ matches and I'm winning more consistantly now.

Alright, I'll add you. Been playing against my brother and am undefeated against him, but considering he has never beaten me in an RTS game he isn't a very good skill reference. But he's my brother so its more about casual fun when I play him.

Yeah, my brother is better than the computer too. So he is better practice. Also he is a fast learner so I can't just use the same strat against him all the time because he is able to figure out counters for things quite quickly. It helps me to keep my ideas fresh, but like I said I always win due to better micro and macro.

Do you have any/many build orders down well?

At D/D- level you really just need to get the very very basics down well:

-Constantly make workers and don't stop making them.
-Learn a build order or two for each matchup. (learn your unit counters too)
-Use your hotkeys (try to use as many of them as you can) and make sure you always use your keyboard to perform macro functions like training units and making buildings.
-Scout - keep your scout alive as long as you can and send out subsequent ones regularly; keep 'poking in' to see what your opponent is up to.
-Spend all of your money. (Try to think of ways to spend your money evenly too and by that I mean try to produce unit combinations that will not leave you with an excess of gas or minerals.)
-Make tons of units.
-Don't forget your upgrades.

You probably know all of those things already as they are basic RTS principles (mostly), but my point is that if you have most of those things down well and you are even just barely fluent with them in-game, you'll be climbing out of D- in no time.

I listed a lot of things there, I know, but people are stronger at some things than others. Try to work on all of them one, or even a couple, at a time.

I don't know any specific "build orders" or really know what they are even. But, this is basically how I start a match off.

-I send all workers to mine minerals, and make the one worker you can with the existing minerals. If I'm playing Zerg, I send my overlord off in search of the enemy. Once the first worker is made I send it to mine and probably by then have a second one in the making too. And for the first 2-3 minutes I focus on making as many workers as possible with the minerals I have. After that I will make a small army of about 4-10 units for harassing/defence if needed. Then I'll usually think about expanding and after that I really just make units and workers as fast as possible until I decide to attack or get attacked and have to defend.

I do already use hotkeys and macro shortcuts. (I didn't until a little while ago, but now I know how much it helps.)
I do also try and spend as much of my minerals and gas as possible. If I can't produce fast enough, I make more production buildings.
I do also upgrade units.

I guess I just need to learn how to structure a larger plan beyond the basic starter and the most efficient way to do things so that I can get up and running as fast as possible.

I played a ZvZ earlier and my opponent resigned in the end because we were kinda in a stalemate, but I was almost out of minerals and he'd just taken out what army I had so he would have won in another 5 min. But when I watched the replay I noticed that we were very closely timed at the beginning and had an almost identical starting pattern. I did learn some new stuff from seeing his play though.

For Zerg strategy and build orders check out Liquipedia:

http://wiki.teamliqu...t/Zerg_Strategy

You can look at loads of different build orders for each matchup there. I reckon it's really worth learning at least one or two of these by heart.

Yeah, this is key. It's very helpful to have an overall game-plan in mind, once you are aware of the matchup and, what's suitable on that map/map-type, for example, it's much more risky doing a 4pool rush build on a large 4player map, than on a 2 player map, whereas you are more likely to be able to secure a fast expansion on a larger map.

Have a basic plan in mind, ie. "I want to pressure early with speedlings, expand, then just macro up with hydras and lings to finish him off". Nothing too specific, but enough to give you an idea of what you should be building and what you should be doing with your units once you have made them.

Once you have this plan in mind, you can then start thinking about a build order, one that will allow you to execute that game plan. For example, you might play against a Protoss, with the plan I just mentioned in mind, and open up with a 9Pool, then transition into 3 Hatch Hydra, which is a perfectly viable game-plan and build order.

That's good! It's very good to look at your replays, especially the ones that you lost. Make it a habit. You really can learn a lot. On iCCup you really have no idea who you will be facing, even at D-/D. You might be facing someone of your skill level or you might be facing some semi-pro Korean who's decided to smurf on the D/D- ladders to try out some new ideas. Whatever the case, you can learn a lot from anyone you face and reps are one of the best ways to do that.

hmm, this may be a noob question then, but what is iCCup? I thought you just meant I should add you as a friend in Starcraft?

EDIT: Sorry, I had to go lastnight. It was almost midnight for me when I made my last post.

Well you are perfectly justified in saying that. But lemme explain. Up until a few months ago I didn't even know Starcraft existed. I've always been an FPS player since I was 8 or so and never really enjoyed RTS games, but Starcraft changed that view when I saw a video on youtube. So yeah, I'm new to RTS...very new.

EDIT:
Googled it. Ok, I'll make an account and all the stuff I need to play on iCCup.

RE-EDIT:
Done, played a couple of matches. So far...lost all of them. icon_razz.gif
