I'm copper league and losing a surprising amount of matches.. i thought people would be bad in copper league icon_razz.gif the main problem with my play is that my mechanics are too slow. I'm only using hotkeys and I'm stumbling a lot and pressing wrong buttons. Overall thought I'm having fun.

Just finished my placement matches and got placed in bronze. Is that good? Played one match at bronze which I won. I saw I was going against Zerg (I'm terran), and my only previous zerg match he beat me with mass mutas, so I decided that I'd go mass marines in this one and I'd be able to handle anything except maybe roaches. So I build up a TON of raxes with reactors, make a massive marine blob and send it over there, and find out he hasn't even expanded yet (as zerg he definitely should have by then) so my marine blob just crushes his dozen or so roaches before stim is even finished researching. It was glorious!

There's copper, bronze, silver, gold, and platinum, I think. So you're in the same boat as me. I was placed in Silver, but I got lucky with those placement matches 'cause I got bumped to bronze after a few matches. Doing well there, though.

I can't say anything about bronze or copper, but I've played in gold and platinum, and silver on my friends account.

Silver- people know how to play the game, but they'd do builds where the never adapt, and don't have the best mechanics
Gold- Better mechanics, know how to stop all-ins
Platinum- they know how to play very well and have mechanics and they were all probably pretty good at an RTS before sc2 and this also includes the pros.

I think about how skilled bronze leaguers are. I envision them as people saying to themselves "Ahaha! My brilliant strategy is finally coming into fruition! Now that I have 2 barracks to help me defend a zergling rush, I can make more than my initial 6 scvs!"

And then I think about the copper league. Do there exist people who are genuinely trying, and have played at least 100 games, but are still in copper?

they are a clever bunch, they either void ray rush or zergling spam on 7 pool. they seem to go mass void rays, zerglins, marauders ect ect

Your silver description fits platinum nicely. Seeing that I play there, platinum can still mean horrible icon_smile.gif.

Yea. I got pretty lucky with placement and went 5-0 putting me in plat. I hadn't played an RTS game in about 4 years, and I managed to 5-0 the placement? Then my next games went 4-6. Really not bad considering it was in platinum. I still haven't been bumped down to gold. Pretty cool lol. nice stroke for my developing sc2 epeen

I think they should somehow put a weigh-in based on how you play the game. They already have the scores for resources, units, etc. so they just have to implement using them. I just think it's strange that somebody can luck out in their placement matches and get placed in a sea of hurt in Platinum.

Also, Lys, your description of Silver actually fits in with Bronze, except it's "some people know how to play the game" instead. There is almost zero adaptation, save for a few of my matches. A lot of my matches go: reaper harass until they finally build air unit or manage to fight me out (a lot of people don't get this far), then marines, vikings, marauders, and later BattleCruisers. If they throw an air unit out early, they're pretty going all air.

Also, is Scrap Station a bad map or what? All of my matches involve trying to bleed out the person before you go out (which I usually win because I can lift my buildings). I've never seen past mid-game on that map. Only once has it lasted long enough to go a bit past natural expansion.

haha i think the rating system is really fucked up, I played my first placement matches without practicing at all and got put in copper, but i can't for the life of me move up for some reason even after 50 games. Then again i do have 2 complete noobs playing all the time on my account.

then i played all the placement matches for my friend and got him put in gold league by going 4-1 (he sucks and is getting his ass kicked)

I know mechanics, builds, i scout all the time and vary my build accordingly, every single game I get map control because everyone i play against turtles like a mofo. Still in copper though, w/e i'll just have fun with it.

and btw the only thing im confused about is when to use ultralisks for late game, or to use brood lords since both perform the same function of raping ground forces and dying to air

Don't use Ultras. Unless you've won anyway and just want to rub it in (they are now the equivalent to the SC1 Scout).

Broodlords are amazing, so use them whenever you are able to support them.

Of the 2 (literally) games that went to late game for me, 1 was on scrap station, TvZ. It does happen, but neither of us broke down the rocks, so that affected it a bit.

Ultras are cute, the way they walk around icon_biggrin.gif. But never use them except for laughs. Rushing for Ultras is worse than mass queens tbh.

I was under the impression that Platinum went something like this ->7pool or 8 pool ling rush and if that doesn't work then go muta and try to win with mass muta speedling. or ->Proxy 2gate or ->proxy 7/8 rax or 10rax reaper followed by mass banshee.

That's pretty much every platinum game an how it goes for me. :\

High platinum is better than that, because if you face any of those strats you can almost insta win. My Terran is basically cheese proof now, I haven't been caught out and lost to cheese in my last 40 games.
