Dude, we are like the masters of provoking people. We throw a couple of silly cartoons in a news paper, and the next thing you know a shit storm is raining down upon our embassies. One of the 12 artists was attacked in his home on January 1st 2010 by a man with a Somalian background. He used an axe and the attack was apparently not very well planned and seemed like it was improvised. That's the kind of responses Danes provoke. People don't even plan their Dane-attacks any more, they just get the craving and they go for it. It's like grabbing a Sub from the street corner. = )

Oh btw, he wasn't hurt.

Didn't donate, don't care too much for donating either, in general. I don't earn much money, or get paid a high wage at that, I shouldn't feel emotionally blackmailed to hand something over either. I'm quite sure that people against this have summarised everything up for me already and voiced my opinion, I just didn't want to quote four pages' worth of comments tbh. If I had money, I'd probably be more inclinded to be but most likely wouldn't, I would much rather help somewhere within my own country or at least continent, so that there would be a higher chance of things actually going to good use.

right when it happened people where asking me "Have you heard about Hati?"

And my response is always "I don't care about anything that goes on in Hati unless over 100,000 people die"
I dun get it.

Also, I didn't donate when 9/11 happened.

As said before only reason people cared more about that was because of what happened not how many people died.

I don't see why people (outside america, at least) would donate anything after 9/11. America is the world's richest country and the only thing that was destroyed that could be replaced using money were the towers and a few buildings surrounding them. It has nothing to do with the half of the city in which these people live (well under the level of poverty might I add). There an incredibly urgent demand of medical supplies, army support, rescuers, etc.

I didn't donate directly to the cause but I donate a monthly 15$ to Doctors Without Borders, so hopefully my money is well spent.

As for those who don't donate anything, you are definitely not morally obliged to do anything, but I think it's incredibly unfair that we live the way we do (sitting on our asses expecting everything to be given to us, while swimming in absurd luxuries and useless consumption) and that some people (more that 70% of world population) have barely anything to eat daily because of things they do not control, and even sometimes because of things our society directly or indirectly created (weather in the past or present).

is that why people donate? if so, then that's a bad reason to donate, because history has shown that nations like haiti get richer not by aid but by investments from businesses.

You obviously missed the point. People only donate now, when it is even more needed. There are no businesses to be invested into. There is just massive destruction. You don't donate money so you hope they can take your 5$ and but stock on the Haiti stock Market, that's senseless. You give money so that they can have direct support like food and medication, in other words you help them become self-subsistent.

I donate to them. Thinking of working for them after I qualify. Definitly want to work some where in either Africa or India for a bit.

Yeah, me too actually. I have no competences in science whatsoever, so I don't think I'd be of much help but I'd like to work in eastern europe/western asia (we don't hear much about it but there is still a shitstorm going on in there).

It was easier for me to donate because I am from Eastern Europe, but now live in one of the most prosperous (IMO) nations in the world. I consider myself extremely fortunate now but I understand how it is to live in a less developed nation and therefore I felt like donating. I, do, however understand opposing opinions and see how some people don't want to donate (due to a lack of money, caring, etc.)

Well let's see...
USA, I live here after all and I wanna see the sky fall icon_razz.gif
Japan, can't play those RPGs while I wait for the end if there's nobody to make em
Europe as a continent, too lazy to go into specifics for individual countries so I'll just take the whole thing with one exception...
NOT France, dun like em (must be an American thing and I think it's mutual)
Australia, because they got lots of fat people like the US and that gives the world a place to at least compare to US obesity
Tibet, think they've earned it

I'm sure there's some others but what it comes down to is that Haiti was falling apart anyway and any money you guys are donating is more than likely going to be siphoned off by the corrupt government. That money is not going to make it to where it's supposed to be and rather than research which organization is going to follow through on getting shit done, I will donate to one at home that I trust. Feeding starving Americans (the fatties here must be stealing all the food because there is quite a large percentage living under the poverty line here) or something that helps out our veterans. I know this may make me a self-centered asshole but hey, there's a reason I'm not in the Peace Corps.

Yeah I donated. It is called my income tax.

But in all seriousness, I don't see a point in donating.

Actually most organizations don't actually give the money to anyone, they buy the food, medical supplies etc themselves exactly because they don't want the corrupt governments to take all the money.

And it gets resold by those in power or hoarded by the gangs who strong arm the weak into submission.

That's why the US and UN armies are there.
