I'm a huge Firefly/Serenity/SciFi fan. So I was thinking of picking up Eve, I've tried it before but I have not gone jumped the hurdle to start paying for it.
If I do get it, I need a active group to fly with.

Is there any point in the game where you can physically move the ship like you would in something like Freelancer? I got a few hours through the trial and thought it was pretty decent.

No, it's point and click only.

I've been playing the Eve trial recently and it looks really good, but I just find the HUD too annoying. It seems like a small thing but it just makes it so awkward to play the game.

Yeah, I started playing EVE again. Had to start over, been so long since I played that they deleted my account.
It's good to know that, even though they added a metric fuckton of stuff since I left, you can still pick it back up easily if you understood it before.
Also, I love my Tristan. Haters gonna hate.

CCP prides themselves on the fact that they have never deleted an account for EVE.
Your account is still there.

Not according to them, spent a long conversation with a CS rep about my account information before they came to the conclusion that it was deleted.
Not that I was too broken up about it, I'd given away just about everything I had before I stopped playing the first time.
Besides, they've added a ridiculous amount of content since I was gone, and it's a good way to warm back up.

Got a two week trial account, and downloading the client right now.
What happens to the account after 2 weeks are up?

It stays, waiting one day...
Maybe someday soon, you'll give it some money and it can become a real account like it's always dreamed of.
