Hey guys, problem here.

I went to turn on my PC today, only to find out that it won't boot. The machine turns on for about 1-2 seconds, and then shuts itself off.

-All LED's (except keyboard) turn on, CPU/GPU/PSU/case fans spin, motherboard LED is also on, but instead of turning green it remains red

If I hit the power button a 2nd or 3rd time, nothing will happen at all until I flip the switch on my power strip. I then wait until my system recognizes there's no power, hit the power button, where it will again boot for another 1-2 seconds, only to turn itself back off.

Any suggestions?

This is usually a RAM or vidoe card problem, I suggest hooking up a mobo speaker to see if you can get beep code errors.

This is exactly what has been going on through the entire thread, and it's not the first time either.
You come to us for advice..you just spell out what you want to get, and then ask us if it is okay, and we have to explain why it isn't. That's the world upside down.. If you would just say 'hey guys, I have an X amount of money, what should I buy?' Then this would be over in 2-3 posts, not 2-3 pages.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Unfortunately, I don't have a system speaker. I think if I can't get it to POST pretty soon here I'm going to RMA the mobo.

OF course you can start disconnecting the minimum amount of parts to see if you can isolate the problem, but a mobo speaker would really help..

Have you moved your PC recently? A while back I sold my PC to a friend and when I took it to her house the same thing happened, turned out the heatsink got a little separated from the CPU and it was causing it to overheat really fast.

Yozki has a good point, my PC, when i first built it, wouldn't boot for the longest time, and I was totaly stumped. So I finally realized that the i hadn't removed the heat sync peice of plastic that covers it so it doesn't get that goop stuff all over the box. It was basicly having no effect on the professor and causing it to overheat in like 14 seconds flat. Make sure your heatsync is operational, and do what Weiman said, take one part out at a time, i.e. Video card, RAM, hard drive, and see if it boots, if it boots when you exclude one of the parts, the BAM your problem is solved, and you know which company to complain/send your RMA to.

try removing and putting back in its slot the memory boards...
try removing and putting back in its slot the video card...

AFTER THIS FAILs.. then try removing parts altogether...

the reason i avoid all out removal of parts is that it will probably require you re-registering Windows due to a "big change in your hardware configuration".

I'll try re-seating the heatsink, and video card, but again, I didn't do anything.

Didn't open it, didn't move it, nothing. All the cables are secure, etc... which is why I think it's a dead motherboard.

In case I need to test components one part at a time, what are the minimum components that the PC needs again? PSU, CPU, Mobo, and RAM?

try re-seating the memory boards?? maybe?
i've had a machine that wouldn't start up.. and removing and placing back the memory boards did the trick...
but usually its caused by moving the machine... or changing something in the machine.... it usually doesn't become a "loose memory board" by magic.

Yeah, I've been extremely short on time lately, but I've already tried booting with separate RAM modules, so I'm honestly thinking it's the motherboard.

I'll try re-seating the CPU/HSF tomorrow, and try booting without the video card. I'll post the results here tomorrow.

If I have no luck, I'll probably be RMA'ing the mobo.

Does anyone know where I can get a case speaker? Unfortunately, my case didn't come with one so I can't hear beep codes.

I figure I'll take Weiman's advice and give it a shot before I RMA a piece of hardware (mobo) I'm not 100% sure is broken.

EDIT: Still no luck, list of things I've tried thus far:

-all cables are secure
-couldn't boot using 1 stick of RAM (tested all 3 DIMM's individually in slot 1A)
-re-applied thermal paste and remounted CPU/HSF.
-remounted GPU
-reset CMOS

It's definitely gotta be a dead mobo and/or PSU =/

Thanks again guys!

It could still be bad RAM or your graphics card. Try different slots as well, and see if you can get your hands on a second PCI-E card :/

just grab a speaker off of ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/...id=p4999.c0.m14

UPDATE:

So here's the deal guys. I ended up resetting CMOS again with ONE EXCEPTION that I found online. When the jumper was on pins 2/3, I held the power button down for 2 seconds, waited a minute, and finally put the jumper back on pins 1/2. Booted like a charm.

Now, the bad news.

I was in a hurry, so after logging into my PC to check temps and verify everything was working properly, I powered the machine down, put it back into my room thinking everything was fixed, and rushed out the door.

I just got back home, hit the power button, and I was back to square 1. The PC this time, however, booted for about FIVE seconds, powered off, attempted to power back on, powered off, attempted to power back on, etc.

So I tried resetting CMOS again, doing the same thing I did before when I fixed it, and now things got worse - the red "i have power!" LED on the mobo won't even turn on now, no matter if I hit the power button on my case, OR if I hit the power LED directly on the mobo. The LED displays nothing at all, it just sits there like it's completely dead.

I'm running into a lot of frustrating problems with this Asus board, and judging from the Newegg comments, a lot of other people are too. I think it's time to RMA this board and rip Asus a new one.

Yes/no?
