Where am I supposed to get the install for windows xp though? I don't have the windows install to burn onto a dvd. I assume I could maybe torrent it but that seems pretty risky.

Does the University you go to give you MSDN? If so you can download a legit copy of XP there.

Depends what you want, I would go with Vista or Windows 7, but most people would recommend XP cause its solid.

Well I don't really want to get windows 7 because I'll have to reformat again in a year. I looked into the upgrade from vista to windows 7, but I'm not eligible. I burned the windows XP ISO to a disc, so I'm probably gonna just put XP on it again.
