Seriously? Don't get me wrong, Wikus is an awesome character. But he was a complete dick for the first half of the movie. Sure, by the end of it, he was completely lovable. But I wouldn't call him the most whole-hearted person of all time.
I actually did end up rooting for the guy and thats saying a lot after we see him abort a baby prawn

My guess is that Christopher was one of the few who hadn't given up yet, if not only due to the fact that he knew how to make things right.

no, they mention that most of the prawns are worker prawns and with out leadership, have fallen into doing virtually nothing. christopher and his friend were the 2 leader prawns that were originally on the command ship. thats why they knew where it was all along...

they landed 28 years ago but maybe they only started working on the command ship 20 years ago? the original "video" is from 1990. i mean, the date tag of the video itself in the film is from 1990. (i think...maybe it was 1982 or something...i dont remember dcolon.png )

Also .. do we have to keep using these bloody spoiler tags? I mean, the only posts I've seen here from people who haven't seen the movie are along the lines of "I'm going to see it right when I get the chance", "Wow, it sounds like it's going to be a great movie", and "Boy am I hyped for this movie!"

yes.

Movie looks epic, and considering it's number 30 or something on IMDB makes me want to see it even more. I might be checking it out tonight icon_smile.gif

What came first, the spamming or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids reading thousands, literally thousands of posts about anime, 4chan, flaming, goatse and emos. Did I make terrible posts because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I made terrible posts?

I was expecting the movie to be far more dry and intellectual, but the actual point it's making is that "dry and intellectual" is ineffective.

For starters, the difference in aesthetic approaches (documentery versus 'objective' POV) lines up with the attitudes of the various factions. The documentary stuff at the start is fucking funny, even though you're not supposed to be laughing. They're bumbling Nazis like in Hogan's Heroes. And it is very hard to sympathize with these popcorn egg-sacs and hobo-monsters wearing lampshades as hats. The Office/COPS-style absurdity and awkwardsness defuses the commentary, making you sympathize more with the cheerfully evil Wikus. It's all a nihilistic farce. Nearly all the documentary footage in the film is biased towards MNU in this manner.

The conflict changes when the Objective POV is introduced filming Chris' story, and the waters are muddied from that point forward. Wikus' POV becomes progressively more objective as well as the transformation takes over. Meanwhile the documentary footage stops being funny and starts being banally evil, labeling the heroes as terrorists and so-forth. By the end of the film, the objective POV has taken over almost entirely and become even more hilarious than the footage at the start, with pigs flying around and people exploding left and right.

The overall point is that audience sympathy is most easily swayed to whatever is most entertaining. But, furthermore, the movie is criticizing documentaries as a format that inherently trivializes ethnic strife by presenting its victims as "other" from the viewpoint of a privileged filmmaker (the fictional documentary crew are basically embedded journalists, given MNU-approved video clips and fair-n-balancing the coverage with a single liberal naysayer). The parallel can (and should) be drawn between the documentary gaze of the COPS-style footage and the medical gaze of the mengele-ish scientists (and the panopticon of the MNU forces).

The movie is therefore celebrating genre, cheese and all, as a more effective, more populist and finally more ethical method of presentation. Nothing makes you sympathize more with the aliens than seeing their empowerment fantasy. The violence is absolutely shot as comedy when it happens to MNU, to the point that the exploding bodies become absurdly mundane.

This of course has the nihilistic meaning that audiences will always automatically side with whoever is presented as more technologically powerful at a given moment. So the open ending is not just a sequel-teaser. It's a moral challenge: do you want Chris to return with a peaceful intentions, or so you want to see him come back with an army and kick ass? Because it you want the latter, then you're agreeing with the "so-called free press" who see war on the horizon because the aliens are inherently hostile and untrustworthy.

Some additional observations:

-Whitebread Wikus is instantly demonized for allegedly having sex with an alien, but society shrugs its shoulders and takes it as a given when black people do it.

-The aliens actually are kind of stupid and animal-like, which negates the idea that this is a simple story of a faultless minority being persecuted. It's far more challenging to have to accept a bunch of addict hobos pissing everywhere as equals. In fact, they can be called inherently un-equal because of their social circumstances. There is a decidedly anti-communist undercurrent to the film, given that the aliens are a collective of identical workers who sit around getting high unless they have a strong, decisive leader telling them what to do. But I wouldn't call this so much a hatred of commies as it is a lament over human baseness in general. Communism is presented as an ideal that can't be reached because people (both human and alien) are genetically programmed towards greed and territorial violence.

Easily the strangest movie I've ever seen. I wasn't very happy with it during the middle. I also missed the first 5 minutes or so. I don't know, it just left me like WTF?

I am someone who can enjoy plot, a lot more than action. Unfortunately, this movie left me enjoying the action much more so than the plot. The plot was just...I don't know it made me mad.

I felt the same way when I left. The action was mediocre at best in my opinion, sometimes it just felt too over the top. However, the blood spatters on the camera made me lol every time. Divergently, the plot did NOT leave me wanting more. I found myself identifying with Wikus more, and could care less about the Aliens. The movie does a poor job to make any of them likeable other than Chris and his little boy, while it spends most of its time making the viewer have a personal connection to Wikus and his pitiful bumbling self. The ending for me was unsatisfying because this unwitting hero, basically the savior of the prawns got completely screwed.

Congratulations, you are a terrible person and completely misunderstood the movie.
