I'm gay but I am never called the F word. However one time I thought I was called the F word but they were actually talking about themselves. Another time I was called the F word even though I never said I was gay, but I just reported the post and now it's gone. It did hurt me, but not alot. I just needed to remember what my friend said, he said not to let other's words bother me and that it's just one person.

I think it's silly to get offended over being called a slur of any kind. Using non-slur verbiage is actually a lot more offensive if you're trying to offend someone imo.

slurs carry so little weight anymore, especially since the internet explosion. I actually find it more off putting when people get offended by slurs than when they use slurs.

I'm not sure what Hippophobicism is but I'm pretty sure you mean homophobia.

I myself don't see it much at all.

You know I'm glad you necro'd this thread to not even contribute to it at all.

Unless racism now encompases a persons sexuality. Which it shouldn't.

Stereotypes are comedy gold.

Mainly for stupid people.

I hate racism and racist jokes. Not because it offends me but because it's so boring and cliche. Its basically a way for idiots to get a cheap laugh out of idiots. The only people who could really pull off racial humor IMO are Richard Pryor and Dave Chapelle, because they did it in a way that was ironic and had a deeper meaning behind it, or because they would actually say some real shit that tied in with the humor.

They're actually funny though, when you see them happen in real life.

Call me ignorant, but I don't generally see much racism on the internet, excluding 4chan.

your ignorant.

rasism is just silly, when used seriously. i think its halarious when a person says racist things, but does not mean it. i mean i call my black friend a fat N'r all the time. as long as he knows im just kidding, he just pushes me a little and laughs. its really not that bad... words = words. /ignoreifbothersyou imo.
wtf is a signature? do people see this? i hope not... i hope its like a diary... well dear diary... today i found out im gay... :)

I'm posting on this thread because I've changed my original views on racism on the internet. It doesn't exist (except for that crazy ass church that makes videos on youtube about hating gays + blacks...) but I mean in public, social places like video games + forums racism doesn't really seem to exist. The words do, but as said before they carry no weight online. If they do, than I'm sorry to offend. As I said before, I am just a skinny white straight guy so it's hard to be offended by anything that could be said.

in RL in the other hand is a different story, racism + homophobics are a huge problem that's slowly being solved. Racism seems like it'll never 100% be fixed but it can definately be boarded up pretty tightly.

I do find myself often surprised by the amount of racism I see spammed in multiplayer games, but, I have to remind myself that when people are raging/drunk/high/whatever, they say some really really stupid things and it doesn't mean anything, just means that they're idiots, like most people are.

I have reported one or two people in games like LoL or SC2 that have racist names that I take offence to. For example, one player I came across in LoL had the ID "FuhrerHitler", which was a bit too far over the line for me, esp as he was spamming pro nazi stuff into the chat after I questioned him on it.

People make a lot of borderline (and way-over-the-line) racist jokes and I guess that's to be expected, but sometimes I feel like I have to draw a line somewhere.

edit - just read way2lazy's post at the top of the page and I have to agree, the racist names and slurs that people call each other are just childish and need to be ignored, as they aren't really all that big of a deal.

Political correctness is fucking retarded, let people say what they want and ignore it if it offends you (which it shouldn't because words are fucking words).

While that may work in principle, there comes a time when words communicate things that transcends the letters and syllables that form them and take on an actual meaning, hence the level of communication that can occur between people.

If you truly feel that way; that words shouldn't affect you, then you would never laugh at a joke, or feel proud when someone congratulates you, or feel sad when someone tells you bad news, etc.

The fact is, while it's good not to be over-sensitive about things, there comes a point when you have to ask yourself whether you want the people around you to sink to such a low level (extreme prejudice) or not.

If you want them to affect you, let them. If not, don't. Not a hard concept at all and one our species needs to learn quickly before we fucking kill ourselves.

I kind of agree to this.

If I read news, even tragic horrid news it doesn't make as big an impact as hearing it from another human being or seeing it with my own eyes. This is why I find online racism isn't that big a deal.

What I DO find as a big deal is when they CONSTANTLY do it. Like, even when everyone's like "haha, real funny. You're a racist, cool story bro" they'll still constantly rage, saying N****er, make nazi jokes etc. The first few times it's easy to ignore and doesn't even appear racist to me, as I know it's usually just some punk ass kid trying to get some laughs (even I used to do things like this in the past on youtube, not as bad as some of the kids I see on XBL and shit these days tho) but when they just constantly repeat the same joke, when they constantly spam the same line and when they don't seem to give up on attempting to be racist / funny that's when I draw a line. It's not only annoying to see something that's supposed to be offensive repeated constantly for laughs, but I could also see myself in the situation where if I was black it'd be 10x more annoying to see shit like that repeated. Not really offended, just really annoying.

Anyways, my 2 cents.

Yeah, I mean, otaku definitely has a point, and I guess I should make it clear that I don't really let racist comments online get to me, because, well, people will say anything when they're anonymous.

In daily life though, I do react a little bit differently, as you have more clues as to whether someone is just ignorant or making a bad joke, or whether they are being malicious, which is a completely different situation.

Otaku, you say "If you want them to affect you, let them. If not, don't. Not a hard concept at all and one our species needs to learn quickly before we fucking kill ourselves", and that is true to an extent, especially on small scale things (like racist comments), but I think that just ignoring a problem isn't always the best way to deal with it.

But then again, that's really a subject for a different conversation and not one about racism on the internet, lol. So, I guess I'm going a little bit off topic.
