I thought there was still hope of getting intelligent answers on this site.

Anyways, I might be saves. The dog went a bit nuts today after trying to attack my sister (lol). They're sending him to the vet to see if anything's wrong with him.

well the best and most serious answer you're going to get here: take him to a pet trainer (and to the vet).

You were already given good answers and you skipped right over them.

Don't be a pussy, confront your parents about it.
Or just stop taking care of the dog. Eventually someone's going to have to do what you've been doing if they don't want the entire house smelling of shit, piss, and dead dog.

The dog will be un-trainable. You may be able to when it's just with you, but your family will baby him and ruin any training you put him through. Dogs are extremely easy to train, but it's a family effort and emotion has to be removed. (Which is obviously is for you, easily.) You may be able to get him over his fears, at least when he's around you. Without consistency throughout the entire family it's a wasted effort.

Soo many people shouldn't have dogs.

Also the guy that said to hit your dog when it misbehaves it generally right, but it's not so much a hit, as a touch. You have to break its focus, so it looks at you.

Look up crate training and get a crate. If it is just 3yo your should be able to train it relatively easy. Only shout at the dog if you can interrupt it doing the bad act, otherwise it won't know why you are shouting.

Reward it EVERY time it does something good.

Well the dog seems to have recognised you as a "master" in some way, and recognised who to go annoy to be let out for a pee.

Either, you can ignore it until gets the message or everytime it annoys you at night, wake up your parents/sister and say the dog needs to be let out. If you can't sleep, make sure they can't as well. lol.

When they complain why you can't just let the dog out yourself, just say it's not your dog. Eventually they'd get as pissed off as you and get the point haha. icon_razz.gif

As for the dog itself, it sounds like if you're going to be willing to sort this dog out - it's going to need a lot of patience. It seems very insecure and uncomfortable around strangers and it's going to take quite a bit of time for it to be more trustworthy.. and that doesn't seem to be happening at it's current situation.

I volunteered for a dog's shelter for a few years and have lived with dogs for many years, so yea, I know a bit about dogs. icon_razz.gif

Anyways, in totality, you have way more of a problem with your sister/parents. Try talking to your parents maturely about it, and bring up how it's really not your responsibility? Meh, best of luck dude.

Just make sure you don't neglect it. It is the fault of the family that it has turned out like it has so treat it well.

My family went crazy cause my dad hit the dog today, rofl. Suprisingly he stopped barking. Anyways, I have witnessed my mother's favorite child which is my older sister. You see, my little 7 year old sister was biten by the dog once but we kept him. Today, my older sister was barked by the dog and according to my mom, that's crossing the line. So she's seriously thinking of giving the dog away now. Which is good for me. Sad for my younger sister. I'm still really pissed cause I have no say in this family and the dog is being sent away for the wrong reason and no one ever learned a freaking lesson from it.

Yeah seriously... the whole situation sounds fairly irresponsible. In any case, our dog is small and barky and jumps over new people, heres what we do.

Why doesnt my dog wake me up at 2AM?
We do not let the dog wander at night. Before bed, we send him outside ('outside') and he pisses, then comes back in. We say 'bed' and he walks into the laundry and lies in his bed. We fill up his water, close the door, and he sleeps. For the first month or so he would scratch on the door, but he eventually got the idea that we werent letting him out. Now he knows not to tap and expects us to let him out around 7:30am. Times when he pisses his bed or in the laundry are generally our fault because we havent let him out the night before. He cannot be blamed.

Why does the dog respect the members of our family?
Small things that we get him to do reinforce the family heirachy. When we are walking outside and he wants to come, he has to sit and wait for us to leave first. Same thing for coming in. He has to sit and wait for us to wave him in or tell him 'inside'.
Before dinner, he has to sit and wait on his mat until we serve it and tell him he can go and eat it.

These things really arent hard to teach. The only commands we actively taught our dog were 'sit', 'stay', 'come' and 'down'. Now he knows 'walk' (because he loves to go for walks), dinner (because he loves to eat dinner), 'bed', 'outside', 'inside', 'off the carpet' and 'mat' (he goes and sits on his mat). Dogs aren't stupid, just easily distracted. You could probably teach ur dog 'sit' in a day. Its all about positive reinforcement. Dogs will learn incredibly quick if they get something out of it.

Training a dog requires treats and patience. Its also rewarding and helps your dog's behaviour. Im no expert and for all I know we could have trained our dog in completely the wrong way. He still does shit that pisses us off, he will steal anything edible and hide under the beds when no ones looking even though he knows its wrong. (When we find him he rolls over, then gets up and takes himself outside).

As for dogs biting people and being generally annoying, they need exercise.

If all else fails:

I should definately get that inside outside thing going. I hate when he asks for the door, or scratches the door to get back in. This only means I'm going to have to take responsibilty which I don't really feel like doing at the moment. Lets see what the vet tells my mom tommorow cause she doesn't listen to anything I say.

It's all well and good training a dog using a trainer but the family then has to make a conscious effort to continue reinforcing what the dog has learnt.
