Third worst injury I've ever had was when I was being cocky (see: fucking stupid) and tried to solo a face I'd never climbed before and I hadn't been climbing for very long.
Shattered my right knee, broke both my arms, cracked a few ribs, and needed to get my jaw wired.
Haven't climbed anywhere but the gym since.

Man, I've been missing climbing a lot, as I haven't been able to go for quite a while.
I can't wait to get back into it though.

I climbed for 1 year normal and then about 2 years in a real club (championships and stuff).
But I had to quit because of the lack of transport, like 1.5 year ago....
good times, good times

How's the climbing scene like in Vancouver? Specifically UBC, I'll be going there soon!

I've always wanted to start going to the facility that is a few minute drive or a 10 minute bike ride from my house. I think I will in a month or so once I turn 18, the only trouble is I'll probably have trouble getting people to go with me. My middle school had a five rope climbing wall and always liked how it was a physical puzzle to get from A to B. Very interesting. This thread reminded me.. thanks.

I know that BC has some of the most amazing outdoor climbing in North America. I'm going to guess that there must be some close to Vancouver. I am also going to guess that because it is located in BC, the climbing scene is probably HUGE in Vancouver. Tons of gyms and tons of climbers, check it out man.

I haven't climbed enough in the last 2 months
Although I have done my summer project like 4-5 times in that period, I only climbed hard like twice other than that. Really need to get out there, I used to be going 3 times a week, now its like 1-2 every 2 weeks...ugh.

Most climbers I've talked to who have had that fear usually just balls up and do it and pretty soon they overcome it. I would start climbing bouldering, then after a bit of that, rope up with someone who is really good at belaying, then just climb something easy and only look at the wall. Once you get up there maybe continue to not look down, then tell your belayer you want to come down, and have them lower you slowly.
Just think about this, most indoor walls are around 30 feet tall, some even less. That really isn't insanely far up there, and a lot of the time there is even pads under where you are climbing.
Also think about those people who have survived faulty parachute jumps...were talking like thousands of feet of free fall in those cases >>

I'm at the point right now where I can do indoor v5's with some work, I can do v4's within my first 5 tries probably. Outdoors I am not so sure, its been about a year since I've done bouldering at a well established place where I know the ratings of what I am climbing.
The comp was really fun, but they graded it like fucking bitches. I specifically asked the people who worked at the gym if they would be bumping up those assholes who join 1 division lower than their actual level so they can win...AND GUESS WHAT THEY DIDNT DO!
Here's how it went down. The winner of the BEGINNER category (ratings v0-2) ended with 2800 points. That means he did 5 problems worth more than 500 points (which is a v4 for fucks sake) he got more points than I did in intermediate, I got 2660. The winner in my category, intermediate(v2-4) was climbing...get this...v fucking SEVENS and even did a FUCKING EIGHT. I am not sure what his point total was, but I believe he got more points than my friend who usually climbs in the highest division, open, but did the next one down, advanced, because he is way out of training. He didnt even got top 3, because everyone else in advanced should have been in open.
The whole thing was a total fuck up for the people there honestly competing. My climbs were 3 540s (solid v4) 1 420(woot, great number, but low
) and 1 630(v5) with that spread out in an honest competition I would have gotten top 4. GOOD GAME SIRS.
Oh yeah its top 5 climbs for reference...

I really want to learn to belay and the like, but living in Kansas doesn't really have "mountains"
When I lived in Tennessee I went rock climbing a few times, but these days I just free climb anything that seems doable (usually for a shot, lol)
Here is a shot of one of my friends climbing a wall that I am currently on... yes, it was hard not to fall 20 feet onto my then brand new camera.

What part of Kansas? Depending on how close you are to Colorado, you may be within range of some awesome climbing out there. No matter where you are, there still has to be some form of climbing gym for you to train at. In my tiny measly little area of VT/NH there is 5 climbing gyms/facilities within 40 minutes of each other. Even south of you in Texas is some amazing climbing at Waco. Pretty sure theres some good stuff in Arkansas too. I would just recommend training in a gym, then taking weekend trips to some good outdoor climbing every now and then.
