The statistical study from the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology is the most compelling evidence yet of a link between the two.

Seriously, breast cancer from night shifts? I think even the most hardcore conspiracy theorist would piss themselves laughing at that one!

Dr Tim Key, a senior epidemiologist at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, said that although the suspicion that night-working was a factor had been around for a while, little evidence existed.

He said: "This hypothesis (that disruption of hormone secretion patterns by disturbed exposure to light or to electromagnetic fields might increase breast cancer risk) was put forward in the 1980s.

"Since then it has received some support from various studies, but is still very much a hypothesis rather than an established fact."

Well its based on something at least :/

Statistically, they were 50% more likely to develop the disease.

thats pretty big actually, still it is just a hypothesis

In my opinion, stupid ass statistics like this dont take into account the type of people who work night shifts, or the fact that jobs with night shifts may put you around substances that cause cancer. But seriously, I bet just about every person who works a night shift smokes cigarettes, drinks, etc. Its not the job, its the people. Its statistics I guarantee if you ask some guy that you know who works a night shift if they were asked to participate in this study they'd say no, thus statistics are BULL SHIT.

why would they ask guys? guys don't have breasts

and the study took account of risk factors such as alcohol, so the results are accurate.

here's your answer

QUOTE
The hormone melatonin, which can suppress tumor development, is normally produced at night.

...

Scientists believe having lower melatonin levels can raise the risk of developing cancer. Light shuts down melatonin production, so people working in artificial light at night may have lower melatonin levels.

melatonin is produced in the dark. so if you work nightshift, or stay up real late and then wake up late in the morning, like i do, take your melatonin supplements

Yeah this whole "STATISTICS ARE BULLSHIT" bandwagon that everyone is on these days pisses me off. You know there are studies out there that are done properly and for a good reason. Because you read an article that quotes a statistic doesn't mean you read the hypothesis/experiments/results/conclusions of the study taken, so in reality, you don't know shit. For all you know this could have been the most reliable study undertaken in the history of man kind with all variables unbiasedly controlled and accounted for.

I'm not saying that the statistics are accurate, I'm just saying that absolutely none of you know shit so stop dissing studies.

[/rant]

Anyways on topic, everything causes cancer, a lack of melanin could be it, but that would mean countries like England would have a higher breast cancer rate than say Australia ect.

This is exactly what has been going on through the entire thread, and it's not the first time either.
You come to us for advice..you just spell out what you want to get, and then ask us if it is okay, and we have to explain why it isn't. That's the world upside down.. If you would just say 'hey guys, I have an X amount of money, what should I buy?' Then this would be over in 2-3 posts, not 2-3 pages.

Usually scientific studies that publish data do have controls, and do look for other explanations for the found trends. Quite honestly what you said was very stupid, because you mention your opinion about something that can easily be answered yes or no, and you didn't take into account that perhaps people before your in a field of empirical data and controlled research wouldn't have thought to find other causes before reaching a conclusion.

But men are far less likely to get it, and many conditions favor certain genders, so gender studies are more helpful when predicting risk to certain people. Also they are thinking it is an problem within the endocrine system, which act differently between men and women.

Because breast cancer is caused by smoking?

I don't know whether this is true or not. In fact, I have no way of knowing and as a rule put no trust in most surveys, particularly those done by the medical sector. They give some seriously dangerous advice and present it as fact.

However, I do really believe there are a lot of dangers and health-risks that arise from a lack of sunlight.
