Has it finally happened?
Has the apocalypse arrived?

QUOTE
The game finally went live on February 26, 2009, 9:00 AM GMT +1, 12 hours late of the set launch time.[22]

The launch saw numerous setbacks. Players stumbled upon a critical bug, which reportedly gave them an advantage and resulted in the developers taking the game down for post-release bugfixing. Despite careful planning and a limited release, Aventurine were unable to handle the overwhelming amount of traffic to the online store and forums, causing those features to become extensively unavailable to customers. [23]

It was also reported by Aventurine, with some forums reporting the number of users affected in their thousands, that there have been cases where pre-orders failed without this being immediately apparent to the customer, causing that customer to have to wait for the eventual release of more copies.[24]

With the forums down and Stratics temporarily closing down their IRC channel for overwhelming their network, during the launch Aventurine has been releasing updates on their progress these issues through mmorpg.com.

They will be compensating the downtime with free game time.

Problems continue to arise in Darkfall, with numerous "Account inactive" bugs and lack of updates. The main page still hasn't been updated to reflect Darkfall's release.

This failtrain is still going? I'd filed it under Duke Nukem Foreveralike and forgot about it.

A game can have a SHIT first day and still become massive...believe me...

The first day WoW was live I spent fishing in Mulgore cause it was so laggy you couldnt do anything but that and chat, pretty much.

So, lots of posts around here about how amazing this game is.

Me thinks the people praising it so highly are hiding?

I don't know, I'm pretty skeptical.
I mean, the sounds effects are pretty bad (that bleed sound is ripped almost straight out of WoW and the other sounds sound like they're from an N4 game or Morrowind) and the combat seems extremely simple as does the AI.
If PvE is still required to at least get the money to the players and redistributed from there, I'd have to sit through that.

The graphics aren't that bad, except for the terrain glitches people occasionally run into.

The communication between Aventurine and the player-base is supposedly non-existent and the game is touted as "too hardcore for patch notes" by some select players. That is a major negative.

Quest text, etc are rampant with spelling errors which is more of an annoyance than anything.

EDIT: It has even been brought to light that the GMs may already be corrupted, supporting their selected clan's interests, a la EVE Online.

I need someone with first-hand experience in the game to address these issues.
I'd rather hear it from a forum member than a blog written by some ranting fool who claims "WoW Tourists" are destroying the game.

I'm kinda sad to see that there's not anyone bumping this thread with reviews/comments on the game. Is nobody here playing it? Or are the players just not being vocal about it?

Considering how many people kept posting about it being the best thing to ever come out before it was released, and how many people are backing up those claims post release I assume the game sucks ass.

The game had a slow start but I think Darfall Online is now picking up steam. I'm not sure if you still have to wait to buy registration, because I know I couldn't order it a couple weeks ago. I hear the game has major flaws but also that it is a really fun PvP MMO which doesn't really exist now. Mortal Online looks to be its competitor...lets hope the PvP genre succeeds so we get more games like this in the future.

i see this post is pretty old ^^;

anyways, i like it. it's definitely a niche MMO, which will probably only be good for those who haven't had *fun* in an MMO since UO/AC:DT/maybe really early days of SWG.

no targeting system is awesome, FPS when bow/magic is awesome. developing specific skills to be strong in creative ways is pretty awesome. clan spies and people in enemy clans defecting and cleaning out enemy clan banks is awesome. the pvp is more fluid and you feel more 'in control' of your char than any other MMO i've played. seamless sandbox is awesome. relying on people on your team to not be complete douchebags is awesome. raping guild cities is awesome.

the things that suck is a pretty long list too, like i said it's a niche demographic - the devs realize this and it doesn't phase them. if you've played a game where there's a distinct difference between PvP and PK, and you consider yourself more of a PK than a PvPer or explorer - you will most likely enjoy this game more than any other MMO on the market (with any kind of population) right now.

there's little to legitimately solo head on. however you can take advantage of terrain (no restrictions on going anywhere in the game, it's a 100% hand tailored environment which means no zone walls except for the outer most edges of the water (yes, the world is flat)). so, basically you can get terrain advantage on mobs (if fighting mobs is your thing) and use your abilities to fuck them up from afar and handle high difficulty shit without worrying about much more than other players catching you with your pants down. if you like to solo and PK is your thing, you can find people listed previously to kill at any time of the day or night...or any passer bys on the way. if you like group pvp or clan pvp/pk, this game is tailored for it. your clan can be completely independent with no city and function however it wants, free from the responsibility of assets to protect when no-ones around. a lot of the smaller clans do this and still love the game. larger clans will probably want a HQ to base themselves out of but still is not necessary. you can ally up with other clans and use their HQ, or just be a bigass free roaming PK group doing whatever but organized events or sieging will be a bit more harder to coordinate.

there's a lot to talk about when it comes to things that people find suck about DF, i'm sure you can google and find 10x more topics about that than what's good about it. going back to the question "people praising this game must be hiding" deal.. people who are praising this game are just busy playing it and not trolling forums talking it up. the devs at DF never promoted some kind of ultra DF hype train, that only came from slothy fanbois. the fact remains the game is just not for everyone. if you're into cookie cutter easy street MMOs that play themselves for you and can't handle losing your pixels when you get served you and many more people will not like the game and shouldn't try it out.

Eh, I don't think it's a matter of people not being able to "handle" losing your gear.

It's that the game rewards people for being griefers. I could understand things like "Loot duels" in Diablo 2 but that doesn't reward griefing like Darkfall does. I think that's the main reason why people aren't interested.

that's why i say it's a niche game, and not for everyone pretty much exactly. what you call "griefers" is how PK's distinguish themselves separate from PvPers. PvPers have a "prepared, equal match at all times" in order for competition to be considered legit mentality. PK's attack anyone and everyone with every trick they know, game mechanics permitting, to kill whoever they want using every resource they're willing to carry. if you want a good fight you'll need to carry plenty of potions, good gear, plenty of regs, plenty of food, a few mounts, plenty of arrows, and whatever loot you get from PKing. the base shit you need to bring to the table is several thousand worth of gold; which not everyone is prepared to lose. that's enough to be an annoyance if you don't know how to survive in conditions where there are literally no safe zones. if a clan wars your clan you're up for grabs in town without the ability to deny the war. so, a lot of people who have a bad impression about darkfall either;
- don't have the ability to run around with gear that will enable them to kill progressed people who are geared in any situation at any given time
- or have never played an MMO where risk was a feature in an MMO to already have a conception of the difference in this, and a consentual PvP MMO (which consists of any MMO with any uncontested areas)

it's easy to ride this off as a small playerbase who plays this way, but people who play competitively are always outweighed by people who play casually

darkfall has tons of problems, but if you are specifically looking for an MMO with high stakes pvp and pk, this is the game for you

Yep, I'm looking for a Diablo 2 MMO in all seriousness, something similar to it. I'll probobly love D3.

I am not pleased with any MMO on the market currently. :\
