Some X58 motherboard, an intel i7 extreme, 2xgtx295 in Quad SLI, a decent PCP&C psu, few SSD's in raid 5 with a nice raid controller, 12gigs 2000mhz ddr3 ram, some bitching case.
but honestly, the 'best pc' is in the eye of the beholder. For example, some people would prefer a skulltrail board and two quad extremes for more multitasking or multicore work. 8 cores is faster!

Eh.. depends. You talking a pre-built or build it yourself? There's soooo many different options.

It's rather simple. K0RRUPTED is the smartest 15-year-old in existence and is fucking with all of us.
Or he's Gillz's younger brother.

How much would this cost? Just a general area.

well over 5k USD
those SSDs are over $1k AUD each
maybe just for the fun of it (and for system backups) you add a HP LTO 2000 SCSI tape drive (800gb/1.6tb cartridges) and an adaptec 3805 SAS controller for it then run all the drives off the 3805 using write back cache for speed

I made this wishlist just for you!
http://secure.newegg...tNumber=8947751
Printer and scanner are optional, take those out and you could get a better monitor.

the irony is that in one year, a $1000 PC will be its equal - buying top of the line is never smart

well what i like about buying close to the top is that they will continue to kick ass for a very long time (currently im bouncing jobs). My income is up and down, so i never know when i'll be able to upgrade again.
For example, my older e6600 + 8800GTX would still run everything perfectly even now, and it is 2 years old now.
so, ya resale value drops like a rock when buying the best but if your like me and want it to last for a few years just in case, its not a bad thing.

True, it's better to get a system that you'll be able to upgrade for a while until it gets outdated.

This is where I'm at now. Pc is 7 years old. It could run pretty much every game until the 360 games started making their way to the pc. Around that time, my computer became obsolete.

..Save the money instead of spending it and upgrade when the best deal is available instead of wasting any money you don't immediately spend on parts?
