Alright so all of the PCs I have right now are really bad. I've decided to get a laptop so I can use it for college classes as well as entertainment.

Do you think this is a good choice for me?

I will mostly be playing CS:S, Team fortress 2, Battlefield 2, maybe COD5, and Age of Empires 3 along with any other AoE games that might come out (unfortunately I'm pretty sure there won't be)

not really the MSI GX 600 is going for about $1200-$1400 right now on most of the websites I found it on. Plus my budget is about $1300 cuz i got a ticket

It's the new generation of the GX series. It looks pretty decent to me.

There is also another version which is basically the same specs except it's AMD and about $200 less. Here it is http://www.newegg.co...N82E16834152073.

Yes, there's a newer one out now, and it looks.. okay, a 7200RPM harddrive and the rest of the specs look good. Dont expect to have a good batterylife though.

both of the comps you suggested had slightly less stats than the ones my parent's computer guy reccomended me (this guy know whats he's talking about don't worry, he wasn't trying to sell me a comp so that made me feel better too)


I told him i would be playing... (in this order)

C&C Zero Hour
Battleground Europe
Day of Defeat Source
CS 1.6 and Source
(Maybe) Starcraft
(Maybe) Battlefield 2


He told me i should have

2.4+ GHz
2-3 gb RAM
128+ mb video card
120+ gb hard drive


The MSI GX600 fits these descriptions with its overclock mode but the 2 that DotA reccomended me have slightly lower GHz than I was reccomended to have

I've dealt with shitty comps my whole life and i want this one to be good but this is about my spending limit right now, around $1000

The ones that i linked you are better than the one that you originally posted. The one I linked (Intel) has a newer chip set and a better graphics card, not to mention that the games you want to play aren't at all demanding and really any modern system could play them just fine.

The point im trying to make is that the laptop you linked is already outdated and in the laptop world that's a big deal. I mean you can buy a new laptop with a 9800M card in it and it will only last you up to 3 years max.

so your saying that i should get the one with the new graphics card but less GHz

i dunt really know that much but I do know that the old MSI GX600 can run crysis on low settings fairly well and can run everything else pretty well

so basically your saying


2.4 GHz + nVidia GeForce 8600M GT < 2.26 GHz + NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT

i just wanted to update this post to thank DotA and Weiman,

laptop works great and runs everything beautifully,
although it wasn't my initially pick for what i was going to play, i bought CoH and my computer has not had a hiccup yet.
so thanks again for the advice and help.


2 noteworthy things though

1. the first 2 computers newegg sent me didn't work, never even got them to boot, but the 3rd times the charm

2. has about 3 hour battery life max if i set it to eco, but even without using eco, game performence is significantly reduced but thats not a big deal at all because i'm not really gaming on the go (although trying to play cs with the mousepad is extremely entertaining/frusterating)
