Back to the topic: I don't believe you should have fought them.

But you shouldn't have just sat there and said nothing.

What I would have done is gotten up, said, "What's your problem?" ; then, maybe throw the toilet paper in the garbage. No need to give them satisfaction. If they're really being douches and want a fight, they'll engage you. No point starting a fight; but you should definitely confront them about it.
