Alright, so I'm getting a bit fed up with the fact that my current laptop, though it has served me faithfully in Battlefield 2 and CS:S, is really starting to show it's age and won't let me play any new games (I've been wanting to play Crysis for a while) or any upcoming games (and I am really wanting to play Red Alert 3 when it comes out). I've built a desktop PC before, but I know next to nothing about putting together a custom laptop.

Question 1. First and foremost, would it be better/cheaper to simply buy a laptop off of Newegg or a similar site?

Question 2. How much money should I expect to spend on solid quality (i.e. made by a good company) hardware, parts, and software (I'm wanting a pretty decent rig. For example, on a scale of 1-10, I want a 8, maybe a 9 if I find some good deals) ?

Question 3. What site would be good to buy hardware, parts, and software from?

Question 4. Are there any good sites with guides on how to put a custom notebook together (I know I can just search google, but I just want to know if someone has a particularly good one they know of)?

Question 5. Will you please punch me in the face for being so ignorant about custom laptops?

Thank you.

Building a laptop? rofl

Not worth it, I think it's extremely hard anyway to get hold of custom laptop parts.
I think the only way to get a high performance of gaming grade laptop is straight from a manufacturer.

Unless you're a student or constantly on the move, just invest in a gaming desktop rig.

Signed, sealed & delivered.

It's not worth it the money you're gonna spend on it.

A better way to spend your money is on a desktop.

The only way I know of that is relatively cheap is if you get a barebone notebook and upgrade with components that are expensive as hell and hard to get. Be warned though my $1000 Desktop performs better than my friends ~$1700 barebone notebook that he upgraded.

Yes. Buy a laptop thats pre-built, you save money but will 99% of the time have to turn all settings to low.

(I can play Duke Nukem 3D with HDR pack on my notebook).

Alright, guess someone should ask this

why do you want a custom laptop?

why not build a custom desktop and save yourself some money and trouble

And the sites that i know of that actually have a customization feature for laptops is alienware, apple pp_smiley1.gif , i haven't looked but maybe dell

Only one I would even consider buying something off of is dell, but even then. PC > Laptop

Exactly why I want a laptop. I'm a student AND constantly on the move.

Or would it be better to keep the laptop I have now for class and the like, and build a custom desktop to have back in the room?

IMO, yes. You don't exactly need a high pwoered dual core CPU for taking notes do you? Also, the battery life on notebooks with a good graphics card tends to really, really suck.

This is exactly what has been going on through the entire thread, and it's not the first time either.
You come to us for advice..you just spell out what you want to get, and then ask us if it is okay, and we have to explain why it isn't. That's the world upside down.. If you would just say 'hey guys, I have an X amount of money, what should I buy?' Then this would be over in 2-3 posts, not 2-3 pages.

Every time someone goes against Weiman's sig I feel like they should be bludgeoned for a few minutes in the head to feel the headache I feel when I realize someone really IS that dense.

What I do actually is take my notebook to class to take notes. Really it's not that powerful and I can get a good 3-3.5 hours out of a charge. It fits my needs for school.

I also don't actually have the space in my dorm to have a rig, however I do know other people on my floor who have full tower rigs in their rooms.

You'd probably be good with a mATX rig in the dorm and something like an Eee 1000 or the notebook you have already.

I'm planning to build a miniITX atom for my room (cause of space issues) (otherwise I might just go with a mATX rig if it can fit).

Alright, I'll stick with the laptop for class and movies on long trips, and build a desktop for gaming.

As far as space concerns go, I've got plenty of space on my desk.

So another question, since I'm apparently going to be building a desktop, and have before, I sort of know what I'm doing in terms of what goes where (or at least I pretend to know). When I did build it last time, however, I just put the stuff together. I had all of the parts. It's different this time. What website would be best to buy parts from? And, again, how much can I expect to spend on a solid gaming DESKTOP (again, on a scale of 1-10, I'm hoping 8, maybe 9 if there are some good deals).

Well as others have said it would be expensive and the benefits would be questionable...

That said... I've wanted to do something like this for a long time and hopefully will one day, if I get the time/money. Heres the basic plan I would do:

Use a mini-ITX motherboard with a ddr2 slot and a pci-e slot, use a decent core2duo, a 2gb stick of ram, a fanless 8600 or similar with a riser-cable-thingy so you can mount it sideways, a small notebook hdd and dvd drive, and machine your own aluminum case. Then mount a modified 15"? LCD and some cheap mini desktop speakers and wala! Keep in mind, this would be a bigass laoptop. Obviously it would be expensive and time-consuming, but it would be upgradeable and TOTALLY KICKASS!

If you or anyone actually did this, you could follow this guy's lead: http://www.mini-itx....cts/itx-laptop/
