Call of Duty: World at War Revealed
Activision's FPS returns to WWII with a new name and 4 player co-op.
by Jimmy Thang

Call of Duty 5 sees World at War
UK's Official Xbox Magazine reveals Treyarch-developed Call of Duty: World at War will visit the Pacific Theater of WWII with four-player player co-op and vehicular multiplayer.
By Emma Boyes, Tor Thorsen, GameSpot UK
Posted Jun 9, 2008 9:30 am PT

It's had its Finest Hour, there's been a Big Red One, and most recently, the series has waged Modern Warfare. Now, the latest Call of Duty game will see the World at War, reports the UK's Xbox 360: The Official Xbox Magazine.

Confirming rumors, the game formerly known as Call of Duty 5 will indeed return to World War II, setting of all pre-Call of Duty 4 games. Developed by Treyarch--not series creator Infinity Ward--the game will portray US Marines fighting the Imperial Japanese in the Pacific. There will also be a "major chapter" in the game focusing on the invasion of Germany by the Soviet Union's Red Army.

Treyarch president Mark Lamir told the magazine, "The direction for the team was to make the best game they could, and as they were doing this they created a grittiness that quite frankly made some people very uncomfortable...This is a scarier Call of Duty than we've ever seen."

When asked about the decision to include graphic violence in the game, creative lead Rich Farrelly said, "It's not just gore and violence for its own sake, but reflects what veterans have told us and the actual history."

One of the levels described in the magazine--called "Maken Raid"--features the torture of an Allied prisoner of war, who then has his throat slit by katana. The brutal scene is watched by the player's character, who is rescued by US Marines much like the real-life Raid at Cabanatuan in 1945.

Based on the Call of Duty 4 engine, Call of Duty: World at War will include more destructible environments than prior games in the series. It will also allow players to swim underwater, as well as use Japanese machine guns and flamethrowers with "propagating fire" burning jungle scenery--and enemies--in realistic fashion.

As for multiplayer, the 360 version will sport a four-player co-op mode which can be played with four consoles over Xbox Live, or two consoles each using split-screen. The co-op campaign will be very similar to the single-player campaign, with gamers constantly accumulating points which can be used to unlock perks. Its multiplayer mode will feature vehicles and squad-based elements.

As revealed by Activision last month, Call of Duty: World at War is in development for the PC, 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, and PlayStation 2. The game will ship during Activision's current fiscal year, with almost all prior Call of Duty games being released in the holiday quarter. Treyarch is also currently developing the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace, using the Call of Duty 4 engine.

Don't fuck this up Treyarch...

We all know it wont be anything compared to COD2 and COD4. The good COD games come every other one (when infinity ward makes it) But, whatever theres a new Call of duty game every year, and Infinity Ward just needs two to makes its masterpiece.

Call of Duty 3 had better single player than Call of Duty 2 and the horrible single player of Call of Duty 4.

Online, I don't know, never played COD3 online.

sounds good. But i was kinda hoping that it wouldn't be a WW2 thing again. I mean sure its awesome to play as russians or brits killing nazis, but i liked modern warfare a lot better. I was hoping they'd make a post WW2 game, kinda like in the cold war era or something

All they need to do is make it WWII on the CoD4 engine and it's already better then CoD4.

I'd like to see a GOOD Vietnam game.

I'm sick of WWII shooters and I love WWII stuff.

We need something fresh and exciting, but with the FPS genre it's hard to come by icon_sad.gif

Lets wait and see before passing judgement on a game that we've never seen before. CoD3 had a great single player, and this is built on the Cod4 engine...just how badly could they go?

Personally, the little press release here sounds like a great fun game.

Ugh.

They seriously need to stop abusing the CoD franchise. It's like they have nothing else to fucking do but to make LOLOOLOLO MOAR COD

lol they won't . This is Activison's plans and it works. COD4 already sold over 10 million. Yearly updates are working for them... well besides Tony Hawk. lol. But that worked for so long.

Aww. I was hoping for a near-future CoD game.

At least it's not exactly the same battles as all the other WW2 games.

See I didn't mind CoD3. The single player was balls, but the multiplayer was fairly entertaining for a while. I'm not getting my hopes up for this one, but I at least want it to be fun.

COD4 had the worst single player I have every played in a game... the levels where linear, the action on screen was minimal (compared to COD3), and it was the same thing over and over again. In COD3 you could drive a tank, drive a car, and had some cool features for setting up bombs and such.

You guys are idiotic if you think COD4/2 had getter single players, only if you're fans of bad level design.
