OK look this question is reallly starting to piss me off lol.
Lets say i have a pci-e mobo and want to get nvidias next gen gpus coming out this summer. Will the next gen gpus designed for pci-e 2.0 reach their FULL and 100% potential on my pci-express slot?
Im getting a mixbag of answeres from toehr forums and all that
if the answer is yes..then wtf is the point of having a pci-e 2.0 slot?

short answer: no one can be certain, considering there is no data thoroughput information available for the card yet
most likely, however, you WILL get full performance on a pci-e 1.0 x16 slot.
the point of pci-e 2.0 is that it has double the bandwidth. though currently a single card will not benefit, it is important to realize that when a board has dual pci-e x16 connectors, it often does not actually have 2 full x16 ability, but rather only 20 or so pipes available, which get divided into one x16 slot operating at x16, and another x16 slot that electrically only operates at x4. pci-e x4 would definitely hinder any modern video card's performance. pci-e 2.0 allows 1) multiple slots to still utilize x16 on each, and 2) futureproofs for single cards that may indeed require that kind of bandwidth someday

Good examples are PCIe (when released has no performance boost over AGP) and DDR3 (currently little gain over DDR2) and SATA-II (no boost over regular SATA until you account for other things like NCQ-II).

So the pci stuff doesnt affect the gpu..im looking for a single card solution....ok..but the 9800 gtx will reach its full potential for sure u guys r saying right

And where can i find pci-e slot bandwidths and gpu bandwidths?
can some1 send me a link?
so conclusion: if im using a single card solution which i WILL do, i will not benefit from pci-2.0 at all for about 2-3 yrs (just a guess)

a 9800GTX definitely doesnt need pci-e 2.0, that is certain, from real world usage
the GTX 200 series is 99% likely to not need it either
pci-e 2.0 x16 bandwidth is 8gigaBYTES/second
pci-e 1.1 x16 bandwidth is 4gigabytes/second

that'd be internal not external bandwidth, completely different and in dependent thing

that's the bandwidth of your interface bus (in this case PCIe)

Yeah Im not gunna spend 500 bux on a 200 series so im gunna get a 9800 gtx for a fking nice price..they sell at sweet deals man..especially since they pwn all 8800s...
so the 9800 gtx wont need a 2.0 slot which means it will be just as fast on a pci-e slot as any other mobo on planet if im only running 1 of em?

The 9800GTX is basically a 512Mb 8800 GTS (G92), they share the same core/gpu. The 9800GTX has a slight OC'in advantage, but clock for clock the 512 GTS wins.

Yes. If you check, the 8800 GTS 512 and 8800GT actually have an entirely different series of processor than the rest of the 8xxx series, throwing them up with the 9xxx series.

The 512Mb 8800GTS along with the 512Mb 8800GT, and also the 384Mb 8800GS. All use the G92 chip, which is ofc a Series 9 chip, with an 8800 name. The rest of the 8800's are G80's.
