Although I completely understand peoples' opinions in that they find games entertaining only on the competitive side, I don't agree that games shouldn't have single-player, and that games aren't a good story-telling medium. Reading a book, or watching a movie isn't the same experience as playing a game with a story -- because you're given the illusion that you can choose the outcome, and to make decisions in a game.
The general direction of a game does lead to only one (victory), it is as if you brought the game to that end. It's not anything that a simple third-grade second-person-perspective Animorphs novel can replicate (remember those, everyone? "Turn to page 34 if you decide to punch him. [turns] You have died.")
I think people should try to enjoy both sides of an SP and MP game, because there's a huge difference between the two. The story and characters you experience in Half-Life 2 games can be so life-like, and have such charm. And the wit in Banjo-Kazooie & Tooie games always brings a smile to my face.

I totally agree with you on this one. I really enjoy playing multiplayer games, but some Singleplayer games are really awesome once you get into it.

pwning kids is like the funnest part of gaming. SP is fun first time round, but the real crunch of a game is its multiplayer. If multiplayer fails then the games fails, ultimately.

Nice, I was really interested on your true gaming perspective. :0!
Personally, I like storyline and whatnot (Mass Effect FTW?), but yeah, people who say a game sucks because it's graphics suck.. suck.

indeed i agree HL1 was good storyline and those GFX were crap yet it still sold ? DOOM was epic singleplayer GFX suck yet it still sells? (Xbox360)
i'm kinda like jeremy here i tryo to enjoy the game as much as possible instead of "OMFG TAHT GUY IS SHINY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and give it a 100% rating because of teh GFX (TF2) i play games like TF2 because i like the differentiation (< if tahts a word?) between classes e.g. a medic cant be a sniper (like ya can be in BF2 L85A1 scope)

I get asked this a lot: "What kind of gamer are you really?"
Instead of my standard 3-word reply (see title), I'll give some insight with a slightly longer answer: As far as PC gaming goes, I belong in the "My fun mostly comes from kicking ass (or the prospect of kicking ass) en route to total global Pwnination (the kicking of all asses)" category. If there are no other asses around to kick, I'll kick my own and pretend it was someone else (read: practice and constantly challenge myself to improve). I'm not so interested in the exhilarating experience of crying while playing video games, compared with uncompromised multi-player gameplay. I like games that make the kicking of asses so precise, so strategic and so fun that they enter the realm of art.
I'm the kind of gamer that immediately after installation turns off the music and turns down all the graphical fancinesses to ensure maximum frame-rate for ass-kicking. I don't care about particle effects, I don't need blur, and I fucking hate bloom. I've played every Command & Conquer game and consider myself a big fan of the franchise, yet have to admit I've absolutely no idea what the story is outside of "get tiberium, destroy opponent(s)". I assume the bald guy is "bad". To me, the goal of CoD4 is "to be at the top of the list at the end of the round". Never does saving a princess enter my mind, nor are domestic disputes the motivation for Ryu and Ken's regular skirmishes.
Not surprisingly, I'm also the kind of gamer that the vast majority isn't. Most prefer the interactive story and aesthetics of video gaming instead of its use as a most beautiful medium for fair and friendly ass-kicking (although I can't help but feel it's because they can't as effectively kick them). Because of this, most studios allocate the majority of their funding to the single-player elements I'll likely never get around to exploring, while mainstream gaming media weighs voice-acting alongside multi-player re-playability.
As a little kid I once spent a good chunk of my summer time-trialing Mute City I in F-Zero on the SNES while fantasizing about the existence and my subsequent victory of the Stanley Cup of video games. 1'58"87 was the result of my extensive training and was celebrated by much cheering and dancing (both done by only me). Now that was some serious fun!

To be honest, i'm a special type of gamer. My favorite games to play are FPS(and all shooting), action-RPG, RTS, and Fighting. I love to pwn. I love be pwned, so I can learn more. I love to teach others by pwnning them to hell, cause that's the best way to learn. I use games as more then a source of pwnning as well. I like to read but not much, so games like Bioshock, Mass Effect, & World of Warcraft are like books to. I like movies but half the time I know how they're going to end so games like Metal Gear, Final fantasy(Hate game play), and Oblivion are like movies to me. I like to play Guitar Hero and Rock Band (only on expert)as well. So I love the visuals and audio, but not when they sacrifice game play for it. Only when it takes gaming to another level, when I can see the noobs brain matter on the wall, not when it takes from the multi-player experience(hates lagasaurus rex)

Aw, really? I always thought you to be the type who'd enjoy going through stylish character costumes!
j/k
I don't think you're as lonely as you think, Jarett. With so many folks replying to you positively, I bring myself as well to come out of the closet and confess that in a game the main thing I see is winning. In my game world Winter is made of "Win" and Summer is made of "Sum Mer Win".
While certainly, from game to game I associate with whatever it is the game makes me do or be (swordsman, gunner, fire-spitting italian plumber), and try to at least somewhat personalize with what I am controlling (which boils down to, generally, giving the character spiky blond hair and palest skin color possible, if such things are present at all), the ultimate goal is succeeding and giving others grief.
A game without multiplayer - I would never consider giving attention to. If I can't pwn and make someone feel pwned, the satisfaction is just not the same.
If there is no slaughter and cool, stylish, precise or even brutal, violent raping of someone living breathing on the other side of the network, the victory would feel empty to me.
I don't discriminate genre, I play in equal portions: rts, fps, and mmos, but more and more games, especially the mmos nowadays lean towards making environment as safe and carebear as possible (basically leaving only two mmos for me to consider: Shadowbane and Atlantica, where pwnage lives on).
I think, perhaps, the problem of games today comes from the fact that human beings no longer like to have fun the old fashioned ways, aka hiking, camping, reading. As soon as a kid turns 5, they want to have a computer game, because their parents play them. But the kid is too young to pwn like their hardcore parents did, so parents, instead of training the kid at games, or taking them outside to play with peers, say "damn, we need to get our kid an easier game".
Because of all options - that one takes least effort!
So, game developers, sensing the smell of profit and sweet money, start producing games for kids, easier and safer, and easier, and safer, and easier...
until eventually we arrive to a "brush your pony's hair" game any 5 year old girl can play with virtually no training at all.
Out of these newbified kids, who never had to challenge themselves, grow fully fledged noobs, under the corporate wing of crap-feeding game companies.
I recall the 8bit Nintendo games i played at 5, Ninja Turtles, Battle Toads, Mario series, Double Dragon, Contra, SNK, Street Fighter, and i compare them to games 5 year olds play today, that practically play themselves and make you watch cut-scenes for an hour.
Standards for pwnage are simply going down, that's all.
A common misconception today is that a game has to be violent or deal with violence to be hard. Not at all. Assassin's Creed for example was extremely violent, gory, beautiful graphically, and omfg how stylish, but it was so incredibly easy and not replayable. On the other hand, my wife surprised me with her Nintendo DS game that kinda snuck up on me.
I always laughed at her condescendingly playing Cooking Mama 2, saying "Bah, where's the pwnage in that?" until she offered me to play it, and I realized I couldn't without practice move the pen fast enough and in the precise direction to make the dishes right. I was like, ok, this game can be challenging.
Turns out it doesnt matter what the game is about, as long as it trains your micro. Though if you ask me, I require pure pwnage in its raw state, when i make another player lose by winning.

I would say i have to agree with you on the fact that gaming is about either winning or losing... now obviously the more fun way to go is to WIN, but once you get bored of winning then you are a true gamer. Because of this you must not just WIN but you must pwn, or if you play console you must rape at the game lawl. But truthfully everyone is just a noob to jeremy so oh well.

No im sick of all the emthesis being on graphics too, and is it me or are companies bringing out games much faster now?
For example, i remember buying ff7 when it came out, then up till 10 they were released a few years apart, now there are so many coming out constantly, and its wierd cause I liked the build up of the next release. Also....I have a commadore 64, atari, sega, all fair old consoles, but all amazing. The crap graphics really dont bother me because the story and point of the game is as good as the ones i play that have been released in the last few years.
I don't have a set thing I want from games, cause I play such a variety. I have games where you can just zone out in the story like Fable, and then ones where you get to blow up zombies and other where I love kniving people! In short, graphics are overrated, unless done for an artistic purpose, e.g UT.
As far as the winning thing goes, yeah I love to win, aspecially with a knife XD, but I don't get stressed if I don't do too well, just laugh it off. I don't take it too seriously.

Heyyo,
Definitely... I do like a purdy game.. but I definitely love a game with great gameplay instead (ie, I love Halo1 plenty better than Halo3, and I love BF2 a shitload more still than some of the latest games even though it looks dated now).
It is also true game companies are pushing more games out faster and faster... but it really depends on the game. If the game's pretty solid on release for needing of patching or not I find makes or breaks a game. Arma II is fun, but it is kinda buggy out of the box sadly.. maybe why the player base isn't uber massive.. oh well.
I used to own an Atari 2600, fucking loved that shit.. and yes... I DID OWN ET!!!! and yes the stupid jar shit was stupid as fuck... wtf... fucking jar.
I definitely am looking forward to Jarett's BBS game, which will have low or no graphics emphasis, and focus purely on gameplay.

Zenova, the past few months that I've been aware of your existence have been some of the most memorable I'll ever have. Hath fate not brought you to these forums, I would have never known such a wonderful human being existed.

Good to know real guy behind the character..
I mostly cared about graphics. Playing RTS or FPS games always..
And i tried what you wrote here.. And i PWNED the game
I always played COD4 on maximum graphic settings with everything that can be ON and what makes better textures and that kind of stuff..
When i changed all the settings on LOW i was like.. Wtf it looks like CS 1.6..
So i played a little bit and i PWND.
My Score: Kills / Deads was always almost same like you know for example 8/9, 17/20, 7/5..
And todays score was the best. And it was more fun then before.

Im really big fan of PP and all of you guys. So. Im glad i know more about Jeremys actor and im glad that he helped me how to really PWN.
I wish best of luck..
