a few weeks ago i got hooked back on cs when i played on a mates css. and i was thinking of getting it myself, but my problem is that i have a pretty small cap. meaning my speed will get lowered to a mere 28.8k speed. so i was wondering is that safe to run steam + css with a low ping if i play on the same countries servers? and also will it be a bitch for updates? how big are they and how regulary do they update?

Updates are actually pretty frequent for an FPS. But running CSS at 28k most likely would be an experiment that would end in tears.

ya even w. 56k, if you're east you wont be able to play on central servers. you'll ping about 90 on east ones and 90 - 100 is where lag starts interfering...
mhm...

Heyyo,
Merc, I say just try it man!
There's 2 kinda games that run really good on dialup... rts's and rpg's.
Heck, who here remembers the days of Warcraft 2 where you could dial up your bud's home phone and get his game set to receive and game that way!? that's fucking righteous man... Some great times, lol. I remember heading over to one of my best friend's houses, and he'd phone up his bud and say "warcraft II time" and then next thing we knew his dialup modem called ross and he received it on his pc... hahaha, that was so mind-blowing first time I saw that.
I used to play Worm's Armageddon online, that game's seamless with dialup.. then again there's not much to it.
I also used to play a bit of Age Of Empires II with my dialup, that was alright.

At work, I use dialup w/ my laptop, and I ping about 90-120 to 1.6 servers in my country, and over the roof (300) to Source servers.

Rofl...that is awesome.
Also, you can always play CS 1.6, many people still play it and it will run much faster than source will for you. 28k is pushing it though. I remember when I had it...took 5 minutes to load a website let alone try and pwn someone with it. Haha. Games weren't as demanding back then though.

Heyyo,
Yeah man.. it was leet. One thing I love about civilization is you can still play it via e-mail, for those guys who play at the office or dialup. Bud takes his turn, emails it to ya, and then you take yours and email him back.. hahaha, so leet.
Yeah, the netcode was more basic too. CS1.6 you'll notice that people kinda "pop" around the screen instead of fluid movement as it is in the source engine, it's cause cs1.6 didn't use a lot of interpolation unlike source where it relies heavily on it.
Now that I think of it.. QuakeWorld works pretty good on dialup, and I used to play Quake 3 Arena on my 48.8K connection, lol.. Quake3Arena you had to lead your shot by like, two seconds.. it was hallarious, I suggest trying it for the lol's.. the only gun that's pretty useful is the rocketlauncher. Quake 4 does the weaponlag even on high speed internet, so us adsl and cable internet users can experience the delay of 56k that q3a had.
[EDIT1]
OH! I used to also play HaloPC on dialup.. and it wasn't that bad at all! just don't join servers bigger than 8 players and you'll be ok. Before when I tried it with my clan they were in teamspeak saying "aww.. ThE_MarD's trying to game with his homies.. how cute" but when I tried to respond "fuck you!" I didn't have the bandwith and teamspeak dropped whatever I tried to say, hahaha!

I live in Virginia, I ping 40 to Chicago, and about the same to Dallas. It's probably due to the fact that I live in Northern Virginia though... mmm 55% of the world's internet traffic comes through here, mmmm tasty.

Ahhh, the good ol' days.
Me: "Mooooommmm, don't answer the phone, it's Theo's computer calling"
Mom: "What?" *picks up the phone
Me: "Damnit, mom!"

I have to agree, it won't be a fun experiment. With lower settings you could probably pull it off, though. As for the WCII, that was a very cool idea, did it with a few friends from my town.

Hey, it's worth a shot, you can't really know till you give it a try.
Most likely though, you'll be tempted to throw your PC into a wood
chipper after the first few times you lag into a bullet.

Pfft, On Rts? Most people cry when they get tiny lag spikes and kick you when you have 3 bars on StarCraft. Usually they ban me. Hamachi ftw.
