I'm going to upgrade my 6 year old pc..

Please don't laugh icon_sad.gif

Mind you all I really don't know anything about pcs. I wanted to know if the new graphics card I will be putting will be compatible with my old motherboard.

The current specs are:

Motherboard - ASUS P4S8X-X
Processor - IntelŪ PentiumŪ 4 CPU 2.4 GHz
Hard drive - 2. 1 with around 70gb other with 80gb
Graphics Card - Nvidia Gefore FX5200
512 ram

What my friend will give me is 1gb ram and his old graphics card, which is a Gainward5900XT.

Is it compatible? Can his graphics card be compatible with my motherboard?

I know that its such a shit spec, compared to all you Dual graphics card Gefore 8800 out there. But I can't afford to buy a new rig and he is actually being a good freind in giving me those 2 plus a fan..

IS THERE HOPE?!

ok, you got 3 RAM slots (should be DDR) and an AGP port

so you put upto 3 sticks of DDR into it and the graphics card will work if it's AGP (i've seen a hacked FX5900 made to use PCIe so make sure it's not one of those)
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

its always difficult to justify upgrading old hardware...
One cheap trick that is usually safe is jsut add more ram. I believe that chipset won't take more than 2 gigs so just shove a couple of 512 sticks in there in dual channel and a 1 gig perhaps?
after that slide with either and better harddrive/graphics card depending if your look at entertainment/games respectively.

I wouldn't advise getting both a hard drive AND a gfx card because that would be treading into area where you could be saving for a better pc.

Imo, dual 8800 Gt is kind of excessive.

IMO, All you really need is a bit more ram and a new gfx card. This wouldn't give you the best of pcs but it definitely wouldn't be the worst of gaming pcs out there, either. For ram I would recommend about 512 or 1gb more. For gfx, since your motherboard only supports AGP, I would say to buy anything Geforce 6+, since that's about what most modern games require (well any that you have hope of playing, anyway - just don't expect to be able to play anything like crysis). But just make sure the gfx card is agp before you buy it (ie not pci-e or pci)

I'd get the free upgrade then start saving towards a real new rig.

The ghetto stick reigns supreme.

Absolutely.

This is exactly what has been going on through the entire thread, and it's not the first time either.
You come to us for advice..you just spell out what you want to get, and then ask us if it is okay, and we have to explain why it isn't. That's the world upside down.. If you would just say 'hey guys, I have an X amount of money, what should I buy?' Then this would be over in 2-3 posts, not 2-3 pages.

Every time someone goes against Weiman's sig I feel like they should be bludgeoned for a few minutes in the head to feel the headache I feel when I realize someone really IS that dense.
