The other day me and a friend discussed games on 360/ps3/wii and tried to list 3 well known games on each console. This is what we came up with:


PS3:
Final Fantasy
Tekken

How can you not have MGS4 on that list :/

first off, even PS3 people i know admit that VF5 is better than Tekken and its multiplat.

Gears of War, Forza, Mass Effect, Too Human, yes Halo, bioshock, and that JRPG coming up that i personally dont give a damn about (i dont like JRPG at all).

You mean blue dragon? It wasn't meant to be very good and I'd hardly call it well known. In fact, take out Too Human as well. :/ on Bioshock but since this is console only I guess it counts. Then you have your list of semi-well known games.

All of the games on that list is a part of a series so those names have been out for a long time and all of those games have sold well and been pretty good.
Let's say I talk about games with some friends that play games maybe 6 hours per year. If I mention any of the wii games they have probably heard of them and know it's a game, I think it's the same with FF, Tekken and Halo but they are not as famous as the wii games. But if I mention Bioshock they could think it's a movie.
Gran Turismo probably belongs on the the PS3 list.

whats the point in only comparing the games that casual people know off the top of their head?

i mean hell, the first time you hear of any game, no one knows much about it. it has to make a name for it self. recently, that is what gears of war did. it got very popular. if your friends who play games 6 hours a week dont know what gears of war is, then they arent paying very much attention to the games they are playing.

For the most part, the casual gamer doesn't follow new games. Nintendo, admittedly (my admission not nintendo's), has a huge advantage in established series. Then you go to 360, which actually has a pretty phenomenal list of new franchises coming. People probably won't even know about those until 3 weeks before the game is released when TV spots and advertising crank up.

If you think about it, all the good games started somewhere. How many casual gamers new about God of War 6 months before it came out?

I mean, when every single Gran Turismo game is in the top #20 best selling games of all time, I assume that SOME people know about it.

okay lets see if he is right, according to vgchartz there's 8.12m PS3's out in the wild, lets assume that 20% of them are either counted wrong or are people that own more than 1 PS3. That puts the number at roughly 6.5 million copies of a game if everyone bought it, Halo 3 has sold 6.1 million so far, and it's currently the best selling game of this generation that wasn't bundled with anything. So I'm going to go out on a limb here and say he's wrong here.
