Hey guys,
There is a compeition going down on my local radiostation at the moment. What they do is at the start of every week is they give you a short 1-2 sound clip and you have to guess what it is.
This weeks sound has still not been guessed and i think the prize money is about £3000 ish. The guy who helps guess this sound with me i am willing to go halfs on the prize with.
Heres the sound
http://www.piratefm.co.uk/images/ss.mp3
And here is what people have tried so far:
"Carl Harratt from Plymouth thought it was putting the needle on a vinyl record. Very Warm."
"Vicky Tucker suggested that it could be a record going on a jukebox while the other record is being put away... WRONG (but VERY WARM)."
"Mary Hawkin thought it was a jukebox making a selection - NO... but warm!"
If we agree on an idea ill ring the radio station and give them my answer and if we have got the right one ill go splits on the prize money. Paypal only. If someone wants more info on the contest please ask.

I think it's a tape, the bang is the play button being pressed (or whichever button). I think.

This. Fealiks knows what he's talking about here, unlike the rest of the people in this thread. I'll probably slap a lock on this and sticky it so that people can make a good example of his intelligence.

The needle releasing or whatever?

The loud noise doesn't really sound like a play button being pressed. It sort of sounds like the beginning of a tape when you have some static, but not the initial sound in the clip. I dunno though.
You only get one guess, or what?

The initial louder "bangs" kinda sounds like coins being put in, the the juebox making selection/playing?

I think it is 1 per person but ill jsut get one of my mates or member of family to ring up.
They're giving people "warm" remarks on the jukebox side of things
"Vicky Tucker suggested that it could be a record going on a jukebox while the other record is being put away... WRONG (but VERY WARM)."
and
"Mary Hawkin thought it was a jukebox making a selection - NO... but warm!"

Well one thing is for sure. You can hear something moving and the vibrations when it stops. I guess the easiest way to describe that is by looking at a car antenna when you shake it and it still moves afterwards. Which leads me to believe it is the needle moving, then stopping suddenly, like after it is finished playing. It sounds exactly like my old record player did.
Also, two of those quotes mention jukeboxes, is a record player the same thing as a jukebox? Because to me, one is something you find in a restaurant, bar, wherever, and a record player is something you find in your house. Maybe that could be the difference.

It's not like the sound is hotlinked from their site or anything. No idea about the sound, lol...
Maybe it's a broken/lopsided vinyl going round and round?

Well ive regestered for the call tomorrow. First i'm going to say about the money being put in a jukebox and me mam is going to say it's "an old stlye record player when it has finished playing a record". When theese old players stop playing a button pops up and you get some static.
good luck to cadetduke and Cypher.bleu.
Ill let you know if any where right in a few days.

You should be listening to Kerrang!.
It is so much better and more laid back than other radio stations.

Errr you talking about the record player here? It doesn't really have static, but it will spin and make that type of sound. You can even hear it in the background of records when you play them. I guess it could be considered static, but it's a sound caused from the record spinning, just the record, with no audio.

I see. Well ive got a few mins to describe it so im sure ill be alright. We just went on an old player at work. YOu push a randombox button and the vynl starts to spin then when the record ends you get that fuzz sound and the button pops up which could be the bang.

Yeah, it's been awhile since I played one, but that sounds right. Don't even know where mine is anymore.
