What Shadowstar means is that Mormons (and native american mercs being paid by Mormons) attacked a wagon train. After the train surrendered and the occupants were promised safety, the mormons marched them into a line and shot all but the children too young to remember the event. The bodies were left out in the desert to rot.
The U.S. Government/Army put up a memorial years later, which the Mormons destroyed. They still deny participation in the event, even though all evidence points their direction.

Wikipedia basically told me everything I need to know about the kind of people in the movie and why they did what they did.
