i got XP home SP2, and whenever i put it into standby it just boots right back up right after the HD's stop spinning

You may have to go into the bios and tell the computer that it's allowed to go into standby mode.

Well have you tried getting the serial num for the mobo and looking for TFM on the asus website?

Have you tried turning it off and on again?
