So, I've always had a pretty sweet ping. I mean, sub 50ms pretty much everywhere, normal whatever no problems kind of ping.

A couple days ago, my internets started cutting out. Like, my router wouldn't even pick up a connection and I couldn't get a straight feed off the modem, so something was wrong at comcast's end. Ever since then, my ping will be like allright, ~33ms or so in a CSS for example. Then I'll start playing and it will ROCKET up to somewhere around 800 and settle on 500 then crawl back down to 80 until I respawn.

My average ping in Guild Wars: 281. 281?!!? The server is FUCKING DOWN THE STREET!

So it's not a game issue. Happens in XP and Vista so it's not an OS issue. Sure as hell isn't my hardware, I mean, network ports don't do that. Do they? I've got two connectors, I suppose.

Anyways, I haven't done anything at all to the router or modem...yeah like even right now the fucking internet light (on the router) is blinking. It's not supposed to fucking blink. It's supposed to stay on for god's sake. My router: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16833314006

My modem is one of those standard issue Motorola Surfboards. Says SB5120 on it if that means anything.

I'll try resetting them.... Yeah well that made it a little better for a few minutes...then it started pinging it up hardcore again. Seriously, I spiked at over 700 just then.

Sooo, what's the deal here? I don't want to go off bitching to my ISP just to end up looking like a knob.

Just replace any part that is yours. The modem should be your ISP's responsibility, so replace NIC and router.
If that does not help, ask your neighbors if they have the same ISP and are experiencing the same thing.
If they do, do some pingtests just to have proof and then call your ISP.
Just hook me up to the internet, 1000 Megabits per second, IV push. It'll feel like home...

tracert guildwars server and send an email to comcast explaining whats going on. second I'd check for nasties, but seeing as you've got two different OS's to try I doubt that the same shit would install itself in both OS's.

99% an ISP problem.

Pretty much what they said. As you've tried this on two seperate OS's I doubt it's a spyware/adware issue, but you're too smart for that crap in the first place.

If you want to hold off calling your ISP for last (as this is deffinitely looking like their problem), I suggest power cycling everything (router, modem) and then uninstalling/reinstalling your network card. If that doesn't do it, it's the ISP's fault.

I'm a comcast customer too. I live in MN, haven't had any such issues with my ping rates as of late. Do a couple bandwidth and ping tests to double check as well before you call.

I would call up your ISP and be cool, just try to get to the level 2 or 3 or whatever technician that can sit there and monitor your connection, because he/she will know what the hell is going on more than likely and see if they can fix it. or diagnose...

I suggest ISP

My router blinks when its connecting, not for internet activity.

This sounds like your ISP but...

Recently I had problem and kept blaming my ISP. Messing around with my router and restoring it back to factory settings solved my disconnection problem.

I have a Linksys WRT54G router, and the only lights that stay "solid" is the power light. Everything else flickers when the connection is active (which it always is).

And as he's a comcast customer, I believe I know what kind of modem he has, and the POWER/RECIEVE/SEND lights are the ones that stay solid. INTERNET should always flickering when he's using his PC.

Ok, here's what happened today. I came home and it was flipping the same kind of shits. So, I unplug from the router and go for a straight feed into the modem. I did not restart the modem. Miracle of miracles! <40ms pings for the entire duration! Guild wars had a couple small spikes but constant pings aren't as big of a deal in that kind of game.

So, that was all fine and well. I detangle my cables to get them all nice and happy, and plug the router back in. Jack myself back into the router as normal, plug it back in, and I get the same <40ms pings I was getting before.

I think my ISP sends a fucking whacked out signal to my router which in turn whacks out the router and gives me OVER NINE THOUUUSAND ping. It tends to happen more often at night. icon_neutral.gif

Oh, and nobody is stealing my internets. 128-bit wep, just because I can. lol.

I remember when I had Comcast their service was unreliable. The router would crash all the time, and I had to walk all the way downstairs at the time because my Dad had all the equiment downstairs to unplug the router and plug it back in. We've tried littery to reset, you name it, nothing worked. Couldn't watch any streaming videos without a router crash.... Finally we switched back to DSL and I could watch streaming videos again.

Their Cable TV service was too expensive. Just to have a cablebox was an arm and leg for a bunch of channels that weren't even intact completely... Went to satelite and TiVos after so many years.

Don't even ask me about their digital phone.... Cable goes out you had no contact with the outside world and they wouldn't do anything about it until 5-7 other houses on the block would complain, even then it wasn't promptly tooken care of.

It may of been faster then DSL, but it certainly wasn't reliable enough for me and the rest of the family.

When AT&T owned those services it was alot more reliable.

my router blinks when there's access over cable, likewise with wireless. it's a good way to check if someone's using up all your bandwidths

I've had this shit a few times, slow d/l speeds stupid ping in servers.. After like a month of that it starting cutting out, the net would just disappear.. In the end I called my ISP told em all about it, "this is 4mb mate, and it feels like 512k.. When it stays on..".. In the end they sent a tech out then boosted my signal strength, it's been fine since.
