Haha uhmm thanks for all the feedback.
Uhmm but I'm a little confused on all the termonology.
And first off I DO NOT want to save ANY money at all.

I keep hearing all this like..

You dont use RAID 0, use JBOD or just no RAID at all.

Now, how do I not use RAID 0? :(.

And by disk failure you mean.. like.. i'll get like 128312 popups saying error error error, i'll get the BSOD, and restart my computer and it'll say like "System drive 32 not found." and blow up? - ish?

No. Just don't worry about it. Buy the extended warranty and you'll be fine.

When you decide to be a man and build your own system, if you dont wanna save money dw we can spend it way better than alienware, heck why dont you just DIY the system and mail me the rest of your money as a cheque, im sure i wont mind.

Anywayz they should give you everything you would need to change the array to JBOD. Get the extended warranty like komet said tho and theyll fix it for you if the drives fail, which in RAID 0 they just might.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Oh, nothing big I can assure you. Just an Alienware Approved 17" 12ms Flat Panel.

Somehow this was missed... I'd imagine a $7000 (or whatever) computer plus that monitor deserves at least a wtf?

Oh wow. Sorry, how silly of me.
Only biiig men build shop on newegg and put together a computer.
To be honest, computers are a little nerdy.

I'd rather not even risk the RAID or whatever. How do I get rid of it?

On another note, I'd be glad to send you 2,000 dollars, you know, just for shits and giggles. :).

Haha, amen, Phate.

Not really, its quite easy the basics of assembling a PC if your interested. As for getting rid of RAID 0 if you cant get alienware to do it for you then there'll be some RAID setup utility or something in BIOS where you set the HDDs to JBOD mode. This will erase everything on both drives so then you get out your winXP CD and format afresh.

Ok basically you can change the RAID0 to JBOD, this will erase all data on the hard drives so then you reinstall windows.

Bunnyhug, you gonna order this thing or just troll around. Cause the latter of these will result in serious punishment.

This is exactly what has been going on through the entire thread, and it's not the first time either.
You come to us for advice..you just spell out what you want to get, and then ask us if it is okay, and we have to explain why it isn't. That's the world upside down.. If you would just say 'hey guys, I have an X amount of money, what should I buy?' Then this would be over in 2-3 posts, not 2-3 pages.

That's not exactly fair, Weiman. He's asking for help on somthing he doesn't understand. You wouldn't tell someone to stop trolling if they asked how a CPU clockspeed effects performance, would you?

Look, let's put it this way:

Top-end systems are never worth it. Performance drop is just too extreme when technology goes up. Take Doug for instance. A year ago, he got SLI 7800GTXes and a 4400+ x2 (I think...). I'm running a 4200+ x2 with a 7900GT. My roommate is running a 3700+ with a 6800GS. All these systems will be obseleted at essentially the same time. It reaches a point where new tech is out (DX10 is the big one right now) and nothing you can do to your old kit will give it hardware features that it doesn't have.

That being said, a gaming system?

The X6800 performs better than the QX6700 in every gaming test right now. It's true that most games aren't truly parallel yet, but the QX6700 and the X6800 (or even the E6600) will all start to choke at approximately the same time when memory bandwidth goes too far or what have you.

For right now here's what I'd build:
E6600
2GB DDR2-800 (or 1066 if overclocking's your thing)
8800GTS
Some other crap.

I used to build systems to the pinnacle of performance, too. At this point, I find that any system I build, no matter how ludicrously overspecced it may be (my brother's 4400+ x2 with SLI 7800GTXes) or midrange (my roommate's 3700+/6800GS combo) lasts about 2 years of running games on high, then there's some feature you just can't compete with.

Your $7k system is going to have the same problems as a $1,500 system in 2 years. Building's easy. It's like Legos. Things only fit in one way, there's little pictures in the manual, and guides for assembly on a number of sites (including the forums here).

What is RAID 0? It's striping. Writing bits to one drive then the next in sequence, and the 2x500GB drives will appear to Windows as 1x1TB. The problem is that then all your files are split over two drives. If one of them bites the dust (and it WILL happen), you lose it all, and you get to reformat and re-install Windows. There's no coming back from the dead there. JBOD is "just a bunch of disks." Essentially you'd have 2x500GB drives in Windows, and treat 'em like any other drives/partitions. If one dies, oh well. Beyond that, RAID0 is fucking wasteful for gaming (unlike video editing). No performance gain other than slightly lessened load times, really, but they never bother to ship real RAID controllers with cache memory. What that means is your CPU and RAM are controlling the logic rather than a real RAID controller, and it takes away performance.

Here are some benchmarks from StorageReview about why RAID0 for gaming sucks. Also, benchmarks that I can't find right now (cba, I'm at work, but I'll find 'em if you really want) consistently show that a self-built system is marginally faster than any of the boutique makers (Falcon, Voodoo, Alienware, etc).

I would think the case of the QX6700 would be a little different as unlike other times when the ultra high end was just a higher clock speed it actually has something extra (namely 2 more cores). It depends if the issue becomes the number of threads its possible to run in paralell or the memory bandwidth/FSB though.
