Edit: Also, don't take these people's advice on staring into their eyes. That's more likely than anything to get you into a fight, as it's seen as issuing a challenge, and somebody will take you up on it. That tactic doesn't really work once you're out of school.

yea i figured that. i really dont want to do anything to draw extra attention to myself or issue a challange bye staring some thug down. not to mention my skinny-ass body isnt exactally going to look very threatening

right now im leaning towards carrying a fold-out baton. im thinking that would be pretty menacing to whip out if anybody tried to attack me or whatever.

But if you wear really preppy or expensive clothing (well that looks expensive anyway), this includes jacket... I suggest you don't, if this place is as bad as you say it is

To be honest, if you want self defense, go for Maui Thai, Brazilian Jui-Jitsu, Thai Kickboxing, boxing, Shotokan Karate, etc. It doesn't really matter what it is as long as you're confident. Above all, don't be stupid. It's not worth it to fight some dude with a weapon.

at least look confident, and not like a potential victim. and yeah, any of those styles are good for a mugging. brazillian jiu-jitsu is good if ur a woman on the street and about to get fucked from behind... any move would be quite intimidating for the guy

swords are pretty danm menacing. but if you dont need it you kinda look like a freak. just carry thoes like rafiel daggers, or whatever from ninja turtles. thoes are badass.

So next semester I will be going to a school in baltimore city to complete my degree. now anybody who knows anything about this city should realize my concern lol. Im especially paranoid of having to take the subway late at night, as my classes dont end until till ~9pm... so i'm seeking to procure some means of self protecton.
im looking for any suggestions you may have. preferably something legal.

Well..carry a knife, that's all you need..if anyone tries to do anything, pull it out, start yelling really loudly at them, it will scare them, trust me.

PLUS, I know "gangster" types, as long as you don't look like a threat, or don't look rich or like you have anything uber valuable that they will beat you up over, you should be fine bro

Anyone telling you to do this doesnt know shit, and obviously has seen to many movies.

Knives are BAD, ok? Carry a knife around and you will get in shit. Eventually someone WILL call your bluff, and try to fight you, getting one of you stabbed and as everyone knows, death = bad, or they will end up pulling out another, bigger knife or a fucking Gun and ganking your ass.

I mean if you wanna learn martial arts that's fine I can understand that. But a large number of you guys carry knives and batons with you when you leave and swear by them. Is this justified or are you guys just a little paranoid and/or like weapons?

Not trying to insult anyone or anything it's just a strange thing to me, especially as most of you are like 16 years old.

I am paranoid to be honest, and I like that fact that I can get out of a bad situation. My city isn't that bad. To be honest it isn't like if you walk in certain neighborhoods you will get insta-raped by a guy named bruce, but some people think they are tougher for saying that where they live is tough.

I'm going to start taking muay thai soon hopefully, also MMA places are very good to go to, the one my friend went to all the guys were super ripped, and they had like 6 instructors all professionals in a type of fighting.
