Take your normal snappy round house from TKD and dont even recoil, thats MT. Miss that big ass swing of a kick and the back of your head and neck are wide open for someone to rush in and F you up.
The way I see it. TKD has more controll but won't really do some damage, since yes, it truly is a korean sport. Not some type pf military combat training or art of war.[All though a spin hook to the temple can take you out, and TKD practisioners are known to be damn fast.]
MT will do lots of full force damage,;miss a kick and youve just kamakaze'd, if your sparring an experienced person.
My point is not to say this is better than that. Just my opinion. And if youve done 9 years of tkd then I'll respect yours. I just dont think anyone whos been doing it that long will say that its "weak".

Love how the resident tough guy is happy to talk trash on an internet forum but back pedals as soon as he is called out. Typical coward. No doubt he'll respond to this with excessive bravado in order to restore his rightful place as a fully fledged internet badass.

Yeah first off WTF Taekwondo stands for "World Taekwondo Federation", I know it's funny, give it a rest. It's the organization that is featured in the Olympic games.
It depends on what you consider 'better', that's all. There's always this myth that all martial arts are good, they are just different. I say if one is more effective than another at real fighting, then guess what, it's better than another. The kicks in TKD are fast, no doubt, but they do little damage and thus they don't have much use. Why deliver a kick if it won't cause damage? Power will take precedence to speed in a real situation. And yes, you're right about the weakness of spinning around quickly after a hard MT-style kick. No argument here. Watch some pro Muay Thai or kickboxing though. It's suprisingly hard to actually deliver that counter in that small window because the guy defending the kick has just moved backward or ducked to avoid that kick and doesn't have the time necessary to move in and attack someone who is spinning around. It's a small window of opportunity that's hard to exploit. I'd say it's a worthy trade off personally but I know MT guys who would avoid spinning around if possible; they'll lose their balance instead. For a powerful kick you have to commit your body weight.

That's what I meant, I was just having trouble phrasing it thanks
I feel compelled to make this obvious. The only thre arts being discussed are Taekwondo, Muy Thai and MMA, because those three arts are what we see the most of in the US (maybe Europe, I really can't say)
Thank you for being on topic.

Bad Idia. I've took martial arts for like 5 years (mixture of taiquando, boxing, un-orthadox etc and 1 principle to know is ANY weapon you have can easely be turned against you in a fight. When somone is up in your face you have no time to pull out a gun, and thay can easaly get it from you. YOu have to think about every possible situation.
Me, for a fight, my motto is look like nothing. I'm skinny (5'6", 145lbs) but I'm made of muscle. And I know how to fight pretty well. Use everything around you to your advantage. Use your speed (if you're skinny like me) or use your stregnth against one less strong than you. Just dont underestimate anybody. Try to avoid a fight if possible, walk away.
Also know your striking distance, AND your opponents if you're in a fight. Extend your leg out as far as you can. The outermost point is your limit, and know it well. Keep the other outside the "circle" around you, and dont throw a punch/kick if your opponent is out of your range.
Man, I havent worked out in like 2 months. I have 6pac abs just a keg overtop.

Out of curiosity, did you practice any hard-contact sparring at your TKD school? I've never seen TKD sparring that wasn't a bunch of love taps.

heres a random vid to brighten up your day- ORLY?
I agree with you, ITF is more 'self defense' oriented than WTF. Doesn't mean it's any good. How often do you train with full resistance (both guys trying their hardest to win) in a self-defense scenario? How hard do you spar at your school? I'm not saying your school is bad because it might be hardcore, I don't know. A majority of ITF (or any TKD) schools are pretty weak though to be honest.

well ITF you're allowed to use your hands. when you spar someone you we're light gloves, and less chest protection or head gear. its also organised before WTF, before it got all westernised. dont flame me for nothing, i used to do WTF as well.

It's definitely not illegal, unless most martial arts are illegal in some countries.
