lol shit, I have that exact same drive in my PC..
In fact, when I got mine built I was there with the guy I ordered my PC from and we had already installed windows and drivers and stuff. He was giving me some cool games off of his network and all of a sudden the screen just absolutely froze. Nothing worked, it just froze.
So the guy turns off the PC and starts to feel what parts where possibly hot..
Burnt his finger on that exact same chip that exploded in that article. I guess I was lucky..

This is exactly what has been going on through the entire thread, and it's not the first time either.
You come to us for advice..you just spell out what you want to get, and then ask us if it is okay, and we have to explain why it isn't. That's the world upside down.. If you would just say 'hey guys, I have an X amount of money, what should I buy?' Then this would be over in 2-3 posts, not 2-3 pages.

Every time someone goes against Weiman's sig I feel like they should be bludgeoned for a few minutes in the head to feel the headache I feel when I realize someone really IS that dense.

Maxtor has always seemed a mediocre brand in my view; in every comparitive review I read they were never the fastest nor the quietest. And now it doesn't look like they're the most reliable or safest either.

This really isn't news. Maxtor is notorious for having hard drives that tend to overheat. This is why you rarely find them used in the server market.

I had a 100 gig maxtor sata die on me. Im not supprised. Its shit hardware.
The guy who wrote it dosent sound too smart. He could have had a metal shaving on the HDD, causing it to short circuit. He could have also had the wrong type of screws in the HDD, causeing a static build up.

Dosen't Seagate own Maxtor now? I remember a merger with those companies... So either Maxtor will have more reliability and quality or Seagate will have worse quality.

Actually I'd prefer Samsung or Hitachi over Seagate. And as AZN_L473ncy said, Seagate recently bought Maxtor.

Oh BTW, the cold boot failure problems I was having with my WD SATA II drive turned out to be my old ASUS motherboard. A friend of mine with a different ASUS mobo had the same problem as me as well. Once I went DFI, everything hauls like teh pro no matter what I do to it. So, it's definitely not a problem with my Western Digital drive.
The 250GB linux drive still overheats when I'm in XP. I still think it's a reading issue because windows can't understand ReiserFS. I'll probably format over that drive and use it for Vista when the time comes (i.e. I can rip M$ off for a free copy).

Asus has issues regarding power, first a boot problem with the drive and now PSU issues with some models?
Dunno, starting to doubt them slightly.
