Fascination, did I just hear something go "yiff"?

These two shots show a lift (elevator) enclosure in Spitalfields market near where I work in London.

I took two photos to show that the swirling pattern isn't static - it's mesmerising, something you might expect to see in a visualisation plugin for Winamp or WMP.

I stood watching it for quite a while, trying to figure out what technology is being used to display the patterns.
