Ok i convinced my mom to get ride of aol and we recieved our new bell sympatico modem today. On the internet it said we could get up to 5000 kbps. So i ran a test on cnet.com and it said im running at a little over 900 kbps. If someone could explain this to me it would help thanks

wow Bell is really bad in my experiance with it. You should have got Rogers Yahoo HI-speed internet. And Its that you have a 5Mbit connection. Most sites dont offer that kind of bandwith while downloading.

I got internet that's 9mb/s, but u can only get it in my area.. If they say you can get "up to" 5bm...That doesn't mean your going to. It's an advertising scheme.

9mb/s is a marketing scheme, too. What hosts are going to feed you from a pipe that large?

usually your only going to get within 70% of your advertised speed. Theres a few tweaks you can do to optimize your connection, but sometimes you just get the shaft.

Howdy, if you wanna test your net speeds, this is always a good site.

Depending on where you live, your connection speed could be dramaticly lower than advertised. I don't know all the technical details but a guy from a phone company said that the longer the internet travels to your house, the lower it becomes because of speed getting lost down the line. Mines not too bad it's 7mb when it is advertised at 8mb

Cable doesn't really suffer from signal degradation the way DSL does.
