K in short and with fairly decent grammer... have you ever noticed this


basically spinning wind turbines

my thought was, the subway turnstile spins a lot more than wind blows, from people going in and out of the subway, so you could get electricity out of it the same way
pic for some reason

of course it would need some heavy engineering since they are like slanted fans instead of straight, and there might not be enough room for generator, although the wind turbines look like they have a fairly small one

im probably just rambling, anyways discuss

Can someone explain to me what the actual point of the Turnstile is?

As a kid I assumed it kept a count of how many people go through each day, so they could keep track of that.

But dunno.

I think you're right, Cake. It's also kind of a barrier so people can't just run through and not pay. As far as generating elctricity, the windmills turn pretty contantly, while a turnstile would be kind of intermitent so that might be why it's not feasible. 'Course I really don't know dick about science and machines and electricity and stuff so I could be wrong...

I don't think you'd get enough energy from it. When wind turbines spin they have a large diameter and so generate a lot of torque.
If you say pushed the turnstile with a force of 100N (about 20lbs for you non modern folk) for a distance of 1m you'd generate 10J of energy, one person per second and you're generating 10W of power whilst people are going through, enough to run a small fluorescent light tube.

Longer turnstile or stiffer turnstile would generate more energy.
Personally I'll stick with burning coal for energy until we figure out this nuclear fusion thing.
Nuclear power isn't bad either but it does cost more.

They could probably power the turnstile itself off of the turning of the turnstile. That would be a step in the right direction at least. Taking stuff off the grid is just as good as putting more power into the grid.
