Once I figure out how to spend >$1000 on my credit card with a $500 credit limit I am getting the following. Just thought I'd share because I'm pretty excited about having a desktop that isn't total ass as for the past 7 years I've either had an old used desktop or a middle of the road HP business level laptop, neither of which works for games AT ALL.

The old desktop could only run WoW on minimum settings, and my laptop can barely run LoL on minimum settings icon_sad.gif

BUT IT'S TIME TO TURN THAT FROWN UPSIDE DOWN WITH THIS B.

Never understood the wireless adapter for desktop PC's.. why?
Also how much is a radeon 6850? You can get a 6950 and flash to 6970 like many people have done. Don't know the price diff though.

Everything else looks sweet. 64gb ssd is more than enough.. and the more free space the better it works.

I got it mostly because I can afford it. That's the one thing that I could really take or leave on the PC, but I came in under budget and the router isn't in any convenient place to run a cable to the desktop. It was either that or get a dongle, so I figured I may as well just get the card.

The 6950 is approximately $100> than the 6850 that I am buying. I am either going to eventually crossfire with a 6850 or upgrade to whatever nvidia/AMD bring out by 2013. I figure the $100 saved will be put to better use in 2013-14 a 6850 should hold me over till then as I'm not a huge graphics whore and have no problem playing games on medium or lower if they are super demanding.

due to some crazy sales I have changed my build a bit.

The case is now the antec three hundred. pretty much straight sideways, but from what I hear the antec is easier to mod, which I think I could have fun with.

The 6850 has been replaced by two GTX 460 768mbs. Why not the 460 1gb you ask? BECAUSE THE TWO THAT I GOT WERE ONLY $80. HOLY FECKIN BALLS. Should blow the socks off the 6850 even though it has less ram. I don't think I'll be pushing any resolutions that need any more than the 768 anyway, and it should be fine hi res if I decide to sacrifice a bit of aa.

And it now includes a monitor, which is nothing mindblowing, but will suit my needs.

Finishing off the details that aren't above I'm getting a logitech G500 and a microsoft natural ergonomic 4000.

I figure this should keep me playing anything that comes out for the next couple years and by then the only thing I expect to be holding me back is the video cards which should be a relatively cheap upgrade.

Of course by then I'll be a millionaire so I'll just buy new alienware everythings as I light cigars with $100 bills.

I got an Antec Three Hundred, nice simple case, never modded as I never saw a reason.

Apparently doing this fucked with many peoples cards. I have a 6950 and I never saw a reason to really do this, max everything anyway.

I might mod it just for visuals new paint job, maybe add a window. Other than that I don't really care too much though.

The computer starts so fast that after installing during setup I missed starting into safe mode probably 20 times. 20 seconds for a complete restart from clicking the button to a fully functional desktop.

Even without video cards, just sandy bridge i5, it creams the piss out of my laptop.

I did unfortunately make one crucial error. I have no computer chair. Anytime I've tried using my computer I've had to do it in a bar stool that is a foot taller than the desk or kneeling on the floor.

edit: GPUs just got shipped. Installing them in 1 hour 8-)

That's quick. Takes me 25 seconds to boot from off, a restart longer.

This may be a silly question but.. would I have to do a clean install if I'm replacing a mobo and CPU? My core2duo sure showed it's age with the BF3 beta.
Doing this will also force me to buy a new set of ram since I'm still on DDR2... sigh.

Most of the time when replacing a mobo a clean install is needed. Even if not needed I would suggest it.

TRAGEDY! i go to install my GPUs last night and realized that my power supply has only 2 6-pin connectors and each of my GPUs needs 2. Ordered a new power supply, but severe morale issues now :-p

I could have, but the new PSU I bought was a shell shocker deal on newegg so it was the same price as my original PSU and FAR better. I got the below for $75
http://www.newegg.ca...N82E16817553005

instead of this:
http://www.newegg.ca.....Tpk=antec 650

It's a tier 2 PSU according to this:
http://www.eggxpert....ead/323050.aspx

I'm thinking I'll just hold on to the one I already have and use it as a backup until I decide to make a media center in the next year or so then use it in that.

edit: either that or sell it to one of my friends/coworkers. To return it I'd have to pay shipping and a 15% restocking fee, so I'd feel more comfortable just taking that hit and giving it to someone I know.

I may actually be in a similar situation as you. I bought a new PSU JUST a month ago, and now I'm starting to think 550w won't be enough for me. It certainly is right now, but I don't know if i5/7's consume more power than c2duos?

If I get a newmobo and cpu: I plan to overclock the cpu and slightly OC the GPU, having a my old 9800gt for physx. 550w wont be enough will it? I just fucking bought this thing. It is partially modular though.. which I like.
