I just bought the total war collection on steam while it was cheap. Which game in it is most likely to run on my laptop, and of the games that will run, which is the best?

Depends on your spec, obviously, but Rome and Medieval are both on the original engine I believe, so they'll be the most likely to run.
Actually, I'm not quite sure if Rome was a slightly updated engine from Shogun and Medieval or not, but either way, it's still quite old. Rome is commonly accepted as the better of the two.
edit - but really, in my opinion, they're all excellent. Just chose a theme (Medieval Europe - Knights, Vikings, Kings, Crusaders. Ancient Rome - Caesars, Centurion, Elephants, Dogs
) that interests you and, if you can run it, enjoy.

"a laptop"?
I have a laptop, I can run all of them including Shogun 2.
Or rather... I would, if not steam would be such a bitch and get stuck at 74% on unlocking game files for over half an hour now...

it's one of the standard business hp compaqs I think. Pretty much decent power for it's time, so now it is not that great, but it does have dedicated graphics, though not awesome.
I suppose I can always just try shogun 2 and see what happens.
edit: medieval 2 works. Shogun 2 runs, but lags badly. I am content with this until I get a new PC/more powerful laptop.

Rome sounds like your best bet, which is good because its my personal favorite.
