Love how the resident tough guy is happy to talk trash on an internet forum but back pedals as soon as he is called out. Typical coward. No doubt he'll respond to this with excessive bravado in order to restore his rightful place as a fully fledged internet badass.

Yep thats right. A 4GB file maximum. How and why is it 10GB? My dvd ripper puts them out at 1.5GB for some ridiculously incredible settings that actually look good. Dont forget the PS3 upscales movies and dvds to HD so it isnt necessary to have the file at maximum size.

Yes I'm sure the movie doesn't need to be 10 gigs. It's a blu-ray rip. And from what it's size tells us, probably no data at all lost, compressed, or converted.
AVI's are usually a nice 800mb. I guess I will enjoy those and the 1.5gb dvd rips.
Btw I own inception foreal, mod that is reading this. I have all movies on disc I just have a fascination for using folders and playing things off of external drives.

I can access the drive.
I have an mkv and an avi in there. The mkv doesn't come up, and the avi doesn't play because it's "unsupported data."

Is it corrupted? I only ever run avi or wmv and I have never had any issues with either.

It's an 800mb avi file that plays fine on windows media player and VLC on my PC. IS your PS3 100% up to date? AFAIK console updates just make the system shittier and shittier as far as format support goes.

Always 100% updated. Did you download the extra codex's for all the other formats?

I have not, and actually looked for any tab in the menus that would let me do this. All I found was enable WMA playback, which is on. And some sort of DIVX vob thing. It didn't look like that's what I needed..
Where do I download this codex'z?

First problem right there... If I would have known this I would have been able to get it working for you sooner. ////
Just because the movie plays fine on your computer doesn't mean it works on the PS3 OR the PSP for that matter. The XBOX 360 would have no problem with playing the file since the codecs in it are windows based. "WMA audio."
Ok... You need to convert the file into a DivX file. Make sure the Video Codec is compatible with DX50 encoding and the Audio Codec should be LAME MP3 or MPeg Layer 3.
If you are unsure of which Audio and Video Codec is being used then open up quicktime player. Open the video file in question and go to "WINDOW" -> "Show Movie Inspector" It will list the video and audio codec used for the video file in question. If it is not a DX50 file or an MP3 Encoded file IT WILL NOT PLAY.
IGNORE VOB ENCODING.
Now this should solve everything. You are probably using the wrong codec. Sorry if ripping your Blu-Ray disc to the computer is the file you want but you need to convert it to a divx file (DX50) and use the MP3 Audio Codec.
Problem solved... Don't make it a resolution that is higher than 720P to save space without it going over 3.5 GB's.
