Just watched this HBO miniseries on On Demand. Starts kind of stupid, but by episode 3/4 it hits it's stride and by the end of it I was actually really impressed. It ends as the revolt starts, and they planned a second series that follows that, but it got delayed when the actor that plays spartacus got diagnosed with cancer, but that's supposedly a misdiagnoses or something. In the meantime HBO is making a prequel series about the other gladiators that were involved in the original series before spartacus got there.

If you can make it through the first 3 episodes (I did it by playing computer games and only paying attention to the parts with naked people) I highly recommend it.

It would be a shame not to have him in it as he was one of the better things about it. Actually, that's not completely what I mean, as many of the other actors are very good also, but he just is surprisingly good, considering the role he's playing (standard hero that we've all seen a hundered times before, not usually requiring high-quality actors).

The other actors I found pretty good throughout, but the editing/story was more sloppy in the first 3 episodes. After that it really all came together and everything felt solid. But yea it would suck if he didn't come back if for no other reason than series where the main character's actor changes piss me off.

Yea, agreed. He was just another generic 'hero' at the beginning. As generic as all the other characters.

I actually am not sure why I bothered watching past those episodes, but I'm glad I did. It actually turned into quite an engaging series.

Yup, spartacus was awesome, and it got epic by the end.

There's a LOT of violence and sex, lots and lots of sex and both male and female nudity, so if you're uncomfortable with naked men on the screen then it might put you off, otherwise it's a great show.

i thought it was an entertaining enough series to watch, but i agree that it does get better later on. however one thing i don't get with all these movies set in roman times, is everyone speaks with some kind of british accent. aren't these people meant to be the ancestors of italy? so they really should be talking something like "hey itsa me spartacus. whadda ya mean i gotta getta locked up wida buncha nakeda guys eh??? watching 'em hava sexa wida each otha eh?? focka ya mother!!" lol.

that's half because nobody wants to listen to italians and half because it's probably more a mixture of french, spanish, and italian.

edit: and english is a latin germanic mix. Of the people that speak the english language they are probably the closest in accent to an english version of latin.

John Hannah. He's very good IMO, although he's mostly done stuff for British TV, other than the odd small role in a hollywood film.

The prequel is actually pretty sweet. Not too over the top. A lot more character depth so far.

My GF has been watching this and I give it a look once in a while.

It looks like a softcore porn to me with occasional fighting and story. Kind of like a novel that women would read. 5 sex scenes per episode.

From what I've seen from my few glances, and occasional listening to it. It's crap. I expected "300: The series"

I know there was gay stuff going on back then. I don't find it funny or strange. Sexuality was very open. I live in the gay capitol of the world also.
