My PC had been shutting itself off the past few days. I'd wake up and find it off or it'd just die randomly. Today at 0620 it turned off. I lost VGA signal and heard the fans stop, had USB leds. Then when I turned it all the way off to try and reboot it [wouldn't turn off by holding front button, so I flipped the PSU power switch] it wouldn't turn on at ALL. No signs of life. After a few minutes, the DVD drive's light came on and it would open and close. No clue what the problem is here. This apartment has low amps or whatever but nothing in particular was running to make it turn off.
Case fans are spinning, gpu fan is not spinning, it has a single red LED lit up when I try to power it on.

Help extremely appreciated, I feel sick to my stomach.

I'd say your PSU just shat bricks
Tried powering it up with no peripherals powered? like .. all the drives and such unplugged, no USB devices going

Agree with Nevermore. Sounds like your PSU cant keep up with the load. Granted 500w is not a very large PSU. I run a setup very similar to yours and was told 700w was needed. Could be on the way out. Also, have you been in the apartment long? If so then it wont be the amperage of the house.
But to be perfectly honest my very first thought was the pc overheating. Have you given it a good stripping down and clean to get dust out recently?

No not recently but in the past overheating issues are not quite so sudden and they stop happening if you leave the PC alone for awhile. Also my PSU has been running with this setup for over a year, why would it suddenly not be able to handle the load?

have you tried reseating the cpu cooler?
Unfortunately given your predicament you wont be able to monitor temps since you cant get it on in the first place.
But if you can check it in the bios even...it might shut off before you see any high temperature because it might happen so fast.

I have not. That's a real pain in the dick with the tuniq too. Real punch in the crotch if you know what I mean.
Someone on another forum suggested removing 24v, 12v, and CMOS. Well, I couldn't reach 12v, [stupid tuniq tower] and I couldn't get the CMOS out, but reseating the 24v seems to have done the trick!

I know your issue has been resolved, but this needs answering too. The higher wattage your PSU is compared to the power needed (need 400W, use 700W), that leeway prevents the PSU from being put under stress, and burning out your capacitors. This is one of the most common ways for a PSU to die.

Good that you solved your problem, but I'd like to know what you mean exactly by you removed your '24v'.
What did you do?

Love how the resident tough guy is happy to talk trash on an internet forum but back pedals as soon as he is called out. Typical coward. No doubt he'll respond to this with excessive bravado in order to restore his rightful place as a fully fledged internet badass.

I unplugged the 24volt power into the motherboard, the long ass power socket from the PSU. I think it got loose when I moved it to this apartment.
